Connecting with My African Roots

This book is not only about connection but also about discovery. As an adult, through my years or reading and research, I became aware of the theories revolving around Pangea (Pangaea), the super continent existing over 300 million years ago that included Africa and South America. The theory is that it broke apart to form the Americas, the Atlantic Ocean, as well as many islands. If one looks at a globe or a map, one would see that Africa and South America fit together like a hand in a glove, and if one believes the theory, then these countries share a common ancestry. So even though what became known as The Middle Passage separated the two continents, the people undoubtedly retain the DNA of those ancestors that creates a forever connection between what was and what is. For this reason, the picture of Pangea on my book cover is exceedingly important.

Black-Water Women explores the tensions between men and women in the Guyanese culture of the 40's, 50's and 60's as well as the tensions between immigrants transplanted to the United States. The stories are told from the point of view of Sara and her mother Cleo, Tina, and Sanka, who live beside the Demerara River whose waters, black and mysterious, threaten to engulf their bodies and souls. The reader can empathize with these women whose triumphs and tragedies mirror those of women the world over. This novel also gives the reader the opportunity to explore Guyana's unique culture of the period and laugh at the characters' idiosyncrasies while sympathizing with their predicaments.

Come Weep With Me

This groundbreaking anthology represents the critical inquiry of literary scholars into the trope of loss and mourning in the work of women writers from the Caribbean archipelago. There is a great deal of recent scholarly interest in the relationship of loss and mourning yet there are no books specifically devoted to an examination of this trope in the works of Caribbean women writers. To fill this gap, this collection of original essays examines subjects that encompass the brutality of slavery, oppressive dictatorships, AIDS, and the catastrophe of the Mount Pele volcano that appear in the writings of women from the English, Spanish and French speaking Caribbean. It is an important addition to the contemporary discourse on loss and mourning. The project is an exciting and vital one because it brings together a multiplicity of perspectives and critical approaches to examine the works of writers such as Jean Rhys, Jamaica Kincaid, Julia Alvarez and Maryse Condé. What emerges is a complex portrait of loss, mourning and remembrance that both enriches and challenges customary discourses of loss, mourning and melancholia.

This book is a compilation of true events which occured in the author's childhood, teenage years...and beyond. It tells of community life in a British Colony, the discipline and respect for authority, spiritual lessons taught, the happy times enjoyed by all before the advent of television and video games, doing chores, truancy and skirmishes which makes one aware that "there is nothing new under the sun." A brief history of the area known as Linden which was settled by the Scottish in the late 1700's, the first of whom was R.F.Allicock, the ancestor of most of my schoolmates, is also included. The book concludes with a history of the author's family, both maternal and paternal branches. Special emphasis is placed on the role played by the author's mother in binding and keeping the family together through trying times, her demise as a result of a politically engineered terrorist attack in 1964, and the rewards of her labours which followed her.
