In this catalogue, the Brussels designer reveals what inspires her: the Garden of Eden and Japanese-inspired kimonos, as well as Art Nouveau and the works of famous painters. She talks about her encounters and her collaborations with high-flying artisans. She describes the creative process for her sophisticated, luxury pieces. The codes of her Maison are implicitly revealed because, as with every Maison de Couture, a unique DNA runs through her three decades of creation.0'Garden of Lace' offers an astonishing encounter between two key moments for lace, which has had the world's crème de la crème at its fingertips for the last 200 years. For the last 30 years in Brussels, Carine Gilson has been creating couture lingerie that combines silk and lace.00Exhibition: Mode- en Kantmuseum, Brussels, Belgium (10.07.2019-19.04.2020).

Heartwork

Nine simple mindfulness practices anyone can use to generate compassion--toward oneself, others, and the world--and to live from that place of intelligent kindness in the face of life's difficulties. Compassion is the urge to understand and alleviate the suffering of another being. And if that being happens to be you, then the technique called self-compassion can be the greatest of blessings—for the compassion you learn to apply to yourself naturally extends to all the other people in your life. With the nine simple mindfulness practices she presents here, Radhule Weininger provides a step-by-step course in self-compassion. Using stories drawn from her own life and those of others she shows that, with the right intention and practice, we can all deepen our capacity to respond skillfully to our own suffering and thus to that of others and our world.

The topics of violence, feminism and depression are discussed as they all have an integral part in the artists practice as an abstract painter. A portfolio of my art practice has been included to exemplify and to support the idea that fragmentation is both a result and a consequence of living in a world that is no longer solid but liquid, as per the thoughts of sociologist Zigmund Bauman. Some key points of Gestalt psychotherapy are used to describe and explain the experience of depression in conjunction with the creative practice of feminist collage work, abstract painting and other creative practices such as poetry. Some causes of depression are discussed using the landscape of the art world to a womans inner and outer worlds experience. Ultimately, the thesis invites us to choose to engage mental health issues not by using the subtle code of discretion of Slavoj iek, that is language and alienation but by re-inhabiting the geography of our existence, re-sensitizing the body with the presence of the other person and with great anticipation.

Ludlow

Incorporated on February 28, 1774, Ludlow, Massachusetts, was originally a part of Springfield. The origin of the name remains a mystery, though the most probable explanation is that it was named after Roger Ludlow, an early prominent New England citizen who played a great part in building up the town and taking care of its citizens. The Ludlow Manufacturing Company, formed around 1900 by Charles T. Hubbard, helped shape the town by providing housing, a library, schools, playgrounds, and even a clubhouse for the diverse community. Ludlow was home to many sawmills and gristmills, utilizing the power from the several sources of water nearby, including the Chicopee River, Broad Brook, Higher Br...

Refugees and the Promise of Asylum in Postwar France, 1945–1995

This book recounts France’s responses to refugees from the liberation of Paris in 1944 to the end of the civil wars in the former Yugoslavia in 1995. It questions whether France fulfilled the promise of asylum for those persecuted for the ‘cause of liberty’ made in its Constitution of 1946. Post-war development and the demand for immigrant workers were favourable to refugees from the Communist east, from Franco’s Spain, from Hungary after insurrection of 1956, and later from Latin America and Indochina. Asylum developed nationally in conjunction with international developments, the interventions of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and the adoption of the 1951 Refugee Convention. Economic ruptures in the 1970s, however, and the appearance of refugees from Asia and Africa, led to the assertion of national priorities and brought about a sense of crisis, and questions about whether France could continue to fulfil its promise.

Dictionary of French Family Names in North America

This dictionary contains data not only on the origins of French surnames in Québec and Acadia, a great many of which eventually spread to many parts of North America, but also on those which arrived in the United States directly from various French-speaking European and Caribbean countries. In addition to providing the etymology of the original surnames, it also lists the multifarious variants that have developed over the last four centuries. A unique feature of this work in comparison to other onomastics dictionaries is the inclusion of genealogical information on most of the Francophone migrants to this continent, something which has been rendered possible not only by the excellent record-keeping in French Canada since the very beginnings of the colony, but also through the explosion of such data on the internet in the last couple of decades. In sum, this dictionary serves the dual purpose of providing information on the meanings of French family names on the North American continent, as well as on the migrants who brought them there.
