Room of Rhythms 1 is based on a conversation between Turkish artists Cevdet Erek and Duygu Demir (born 1974 and 1971) that reflects on sound, architecture, measured time and rhythm. The publication surveys the research that led to Room of Rhythms, an installation presented at Documenta 13.
Cevdet Erek: Bergama Stereotip
A continuation and a variation of the work Bergama Stereo, which was first presented in Germany at Turbinenhalle as part of the Ruhrtriennale in Bochum and then in the historical hall of Hamburger Bahnhof Museum in Berlin in 2019, Cevdet Erek’s solo exhibition Bergama Stereotip consists of a sounding architecture conceived for the gallery space at Arter. Curated by Selen Ansen, Bergama Stereotip stands as a vestige featuring a portion of Bergama Stereo’s structure: a reminder of the Great Altar of Pergamon and a remainder of the work’s prior version. The book accompanying the exhibition features an essay by Colin Lang focusing on Bergama Stereo and Selen Ansen’s curatorial text on the exhibition at Arter. The book, designed by Vahit Tuna, brings together installation views taken by flufoto with photographs showing the historical remains of the Great Altar as well as its display in the Pergamonmuseum.

The Sound of Undoing
A memoir in essays, The Sound of Undoing deconstructs the way sound has overwhelmingly shaped Paige Towers's life. Each essay focuses on a different sound, some perceptible--like the sound of a loon call or gunshot--and others abstract--like the sound of awakening. Given a hypersensitivity to noise from which she has both suffered and benefited since childhood, Towers uses these sounds as a starting point for making sense of past events. She reflects on the estrangement of a beloved sister, sexual abuse and assault, and the link between mental illness and noise in her family, as well as nature, religion, violence, and other themes. Experimental in form and provocative in content, The Sound of Undoing also makes use of research on silence, nature and noise pollution, listening, sound art, autonomous sensory meridian response, and the acoustic environment in general. By exploring memories and feelings triggered by certain noises, this lyrical meditation untangles a life infused with meaning through sound. Paige Towers is a freelance writer.
