English Gypsies and State Policies

After an overview of Gypsy persecution in Europe from the earliest days to the Nazi holocaust the book describes the efforts of central government in England to control Gypsies by legislation. A Secret Mind

A Secret Mind

A lively, moving novel that vividly recreates the 1880s: the harsh lives; the attitudes to madness and to drunkenness; and the strength of friendship and love. After an accident at four years old, Libby Budd has difficulty speaking. Her devoted father refuses to see there's a problem - even when she starts having fits, seeing dead people and, as she grows older, behaving erratically and violently. In the 1880s, all the doctors can recommend is that she be sent to an asylum, but it's only when Libby's father dies that her desperate mother, Sylvia, considers this seriously. Their community of Stafford is disintegrating as sources of work disappear; Sylvia's close friends the Bramwells have moved to Hokitika; and people there are preoccupied with their own concerns, new scandals, new ventures and new settlers. The only person Sylvia can turn to is Arnold Price, the lodger, and he has his own reasons for wanting Libby out of the way.

Naugatuck Revisited

Naugatuck Revisited is an exciting new look at this historic Connecticut community. Settled in the early 1700s, Naugatuck was incorporated in 1844 and developed through the ingenuity of entrepreneurs who exploited its rivers and railroads. This volume includes images and stories of the borough's many notable luminaries, including inventor Charles Goodyear, resident and World Series Most Valuable Player Frank "Spec" Shea of the New York Yankees, legendary Hollywood fashion designer Adrian Gilbert, and the founders of the Peter Paul candy company, makers of Almond Joy and Mounds. Robert Redford spent time here preparing for the movie The Natural, and Senator John F. Kennedy made an early morning presidential campaign stop here on his way to Waterbury.

South Hadley

South Hadley covers the history of the community from its early settlement through 1965 with an unprecedented pictorial collection. The South Hadley Historical Society presents a lasting tribute to the people and places of its past and celebrates the change, growth, and development the town has seen since its beginnings. Featured in this book are the many families who have contributed to South Hadley's history, including the Woodbridges, Carews, Bardwells, Smiths, Gaylords, and Eastmans. Also depicted are the churches and schools that have colored the history of the community. The development of one-room schoolhouses into modern systems is pictured, as well as the establishment of Mount Holyoke College, the first women's college in the United States. Evolutions in transportation, participation in wars, and the unique phenomena of Titan's Pier and Titan's Piazza are all explored in South Hadley.
