Magnolia

It was the sweet-smelling, flowering magnolia tree dominating the grounds near a rural railroad stop that transformed the South Jersey settlement of Greenland into the tiny borough of Magnolia. But while it may have been named for a tree, it was community spirit that inspired Magnolias official slogan, One Square Mile of Friendliness. Magnolia celebrates that spirit through an impressive collection of rare photographs. These include Dr. Leslie Lyon, who accepted chickens as payment for house calls during the Depression, the state police substation that protected the region from organized crime during Prohibition, and the home of Aunt Nell, who was always there to lend a hand to those in need. Also included are images of the boroughs early citizens; schools; churches; police, fire, and ambulance squads; businesses; and community activities.

Make It Go in the Snow

Through the years, the challenge of powered transportation in the snow has been met with ideas from explorers, creative inventors and small companies, all with new ideas - often unique and sometimes successful. The name "snowmobile" was trademarked in 1917, but there were snow travel ideas before that date and certainly thousands more since. Winter explorers and trailblazers sought to replace their dogsleds and snowshoes as they explored difficult locations, including remote locations, on the north and south poles. Early inventors of snow vehicles often scavenged parts from many mechanical devices, trying many power and propulsion methods, from 2- and 4-stroke engines to air propulsion, and ...

Mediaeval Commentaries on the Sentences of Peter Lombard

The work published in this third, and final, volume of Brill’s handbook on the tradition of the Book of Sentences breaks new ground in three ways. First, several chapters contribute to the debate concerning the meaning of medieval authority and authorship. For some of the most influential literature on the Sentences consisted of study aids and compilations that were derivative or circulated anonymously. Consequently, the volume also sheds light on theological education “on the ground”—the kind of teaching that was dispensed by the average master and received by the average student. Finally, the contributors show that Peter Lombard’s textbook played a much more dynamic role in later medieval theology than hitherto assumed. The work remained a force to be reckoned with until at least the sixteenth century, especially in the Iberian Peninsula. Contributors are Claire Angotti, Monica Brinzei, Franklin T. Harkins, Severin V. Kitanov, Lidia Lanza, Philipp W. Rosemann, Chris Schabel, John T. Slotemaker, Marco Toste, Jeffrey C. Witt, and Ueli Zahnd.
