Theology, Fantasy, and the Imagination offers analyses of the theological, philosophical, and religious imagination found in fantasy literature, the theological imagination, and table-top games. Part I offers an invocation to the study through a theological reflection of the “old magic.” Part II analyzes classical Christian fantasy—ranging from dogmatic theological reflection on the fantastic imagination to analyses of C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. Part III analyzes the post-Christian turn in fantasy after about 1960 through today—featuring methodological, theological, and philosophical essays that reflect a movement beyond Christianity in the fantasy literature and writings of Rabbi Shagar, Ursula le Guin, Terry Pratchett, Robert Jordan and David Eddings, and Brandon Sanderson and Orson Scott Card. Part IV closes with two analyses of the religious and philosophical dimensions of table-top games, including Dungeons and Dragons and Magic: the Gathering. Theology, Fantasy, and the Imagination offers astute analyses of how theological fantasy actually is by articulating the religious, philosophical, and theological dimensions of the fantastic imagination.
Tolkien and the Classics
The origins of this collection are twofold. First, the awareness of the importance of making scholars and critics realize how much J.R.R. Tolkien is a great literary classic, comparable to those already accepted as 'canonical'. Second, to offer a publication that could be made use of by students and teachers of secondary schools / universities.
The Broken Scy
What is the central theme of The Lord of the Rings? J.R.R. Tolkien's answer to this apparently simple question may surprise some readers: "I do not think that even Power or Domination is the real centre of my story [...] The real theme for me is about something much more permanent and difficult: Death and Immortality" (Letters no. 186). Despite this very clear statement, only a small number of published studies have focused on these two themes. This collection of essays by Italian scholars aims at filling this lacuna in the critical scholarship. The nine papers, introduced by Verlyn Flieger's preface, are the result of a two-year interdisciplinary project that concentrated on death and immortality and provide a fascinating, multi-facetted exploration of these fundamental aspects of Tolkien's work.

"Tolkien and Philosophy" is a theme that has not yet been studied with the "philological" accuracy and the textual knowledge that are required to avoid squeezing the Professor's works inside conceptual frameworks that, rather than exposing their intrinsic value, risk losing both their profound meaning and their inherent beauty. What is the relationship between Tolkien's work and Philosophy? The question, if taken seriously, is by no means trivial. For these reasons we wish this book to become, in both method and content, an essential point of reference for anyone interested in better understanding the significant elements that sometimes link, sometimes divide, the "philologist" Tolkien from proper speculative philosophy.
The FRBR Family of Conceptual Models
Since 1998 when FRBR (Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records) was first published by IFLA, the effort to develop and apply FRBR has been extended in many innovative and experimental directions. Papers in this volume explain and expand upon the extended family of FRBR models including Functional Requirements for Authority Data (FRAD), Functional Requirements for Subject Authority Data (FRSAD), and the object-oriented version of FRBR known as FRBRoo. Readers will learn about dialogues between the FRBR Family and other modeling technologies, specific implementations and extensions of FRBR in retrieval systems, catalog codes employing FRBR, a wide variety of research that uses the FRBR model, and approaches to using FRBR for the Semantic Web.
