Artistic Disobedience
In Artistic Disobedience Claudio Bacciagaluppi shows how music practice was an occasion for cross-confessional contacts in 17th- and 18th-century Switzerland, implying religious toleration. The difference between public and private performing contexts, each with a distinct repertoire, appears to be of paramount importance. Confessional barriers were overcome in an individual, private perspective. Converted musicians provide striking examples. Also, book trade was often cross-confessional. Music by Catholic (but also Lutheran) composers was diffused in Reformed territories mainly in the private music societies of Swiss German towns (collegia musica). The political and pietist influences in the Zurich and Winterthur music societies encouraged forms of communication that are among the acknowledged common roots of European Enlightenment.

Diese Lücke schliesst die Reihe 'Geschichte des Gottesdienstes in den evangelisch-reformierten Kirchen der Deutschschweiz'. Der dritte Band befasst sich mit den Voraussetzungen und der Entwicklung der Reformation in der Stadt St. Gallen, im Rheintal, im unteren Toggenburg und im Fürstenland zwischen Rorschach und Wil. Ein besonderer Schwerpunkt liegt auf der sankt-gallischen Benediktinerabtei und den Klostergemeinschaften, die während der Reformation nicht durchgängig aufgehoben wurden.

Wiborada von St. Gallen – die erste Frau, die weltweit heiliggesprochen wurde – lebte vor 1100 Jahren als Inklusin in einer Zelle bei der Kirche St. Mangen. Sie wurde bekannt, weil sie trotz dieser Lebensform allen Menschen zugewandt blieb: Durch ein Fenster segnete sie Brot und Wein und gab weltlichen und geistlichen Herren Rat. Täglich betete sie die Psalmen. Nicht zuletzt gab ihr Martyrium beim kriegerischen Einfall der Ungarn in der Ostschweiz Anlass zu Verehrung, Wundererzählungen und Heiligsprechung. Wiboradas eingeschlossenes und zugleich freies Leben ist aus vielen Gründen interessant. Der Band bringt Perspektiven aus Theologie, Geschichte und Religionswissenschaft zusammen, macht ein Stück Religionsgeschichte der Schweiz sichtbar und zeigt, wie das Erbe von damals für das heutige kirchliche, politische und gesellschaftliche Leben fruchtbar gemacht werden kann.
