With the current interest in and potential for hypersonic flight, th ere is a need to determine the Air Force and for the nation the R & D approaches required to realize the opportunities offered by flight in this regime. The committee: (1) determined possible military uses of hypersonic flight, (2) drew on the developing hypersonic technology base, including the evolving results of NASP Phase II, to assess the technical feasibility of meeting the potential applications, (3) identified the technological needs for hypersonic flight, (4) assessed the R & D support requirements including availability of expertise, data bases, and test facilities, (5) provided technical advice to the command level on the R & D strategy of the NASP. Review and Evaluation of the Air Force Hypersonic Technology Program

This study was undertaken in response to a request by the U.S. Air Force that the National Research Council (NRC) examine whether the technologies that underlie the concept of a hypersonic, air-launched, air-breathing, hydrocarbon-fueled missile with speeds up to Mach 81 can be demonstrated in time to be initially operational by 2015. To conduct the study, the NRC appointed the Committee on Review and Evaluation of the Air Force Hypersonic Technology Program, under the auspices of the Air Force Science and Technology Board.

Hypersonic Airbreathing Propulsion

An almost entirely self-contained engineering textbook primarily for use in undergraduate and graduate courses in airbreathing propulsion. It provides a broad and basic introduction to the elements needed to work in the field as it develops and grows. Homework problems are provided for almost every individual subject. An extensive array of PC-based user-friendly computer programs is provided in order to facilitate repetitious and/or complex calculations. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

An essential new account of some of the most valuable research and development in international military history. Roy F. Houchin II shows how the roots of US Air Force hypersonic research and development are grounded in Army Air Force General Henry H. 'Hap' Arnold's identification of the need for advanced airpower weapon systems to meet the anticipated postwar enemy threat. The technology for a smooth transition to military spaceflight seemed within reach when Bell Aircraft Corporation executive Walter Dornberger (the former commander of Nazi Germany's V-2 rocket research) made an unsolicited proposal to William E. Lamar (the chief of Wright Aeronautical Development Center's New Development ...

From Earth to Orbit

If the United States hopes to continue as a leader in space, it must invest now in better earth-to-orbit technology by replacing obsolete launch facilities while also developing a new class of more robust and reliable vehicles. From Earth to Orbit provides strategies to reduce launch costs while increasing the reliability and resiliency of vehicles. It also recommends continued improvements for the Space Shuttle Orbiter and its subsystems and the development of a Space Transportation Main Engine (STME).
