Lizzie and the Guernsey Gang

Children's Christian Historical Fiction, ages 7-12, Ideal for homeschoolers **2012 Selah Award Winner** In the shadows of the Nazi occupation, four Guernsey children plot a path to freedom. Lizzie Browning loves her tiny, island home of Guernsey. It's quaint and peaceful, but when Germans drop bombs on her beautiful beach, the island becomes a prison. For months, the big war in Europe has been nothing more than stories in the paper, but as the enemy marches in, those dreadful stories become her own. For Lizzie, younger brother Andre, and Cousin James, the time to escape is now, and they know just how to do it. Phillip Seifert, the odd boy from down the street, has all the makings of a genuine Nazi-lover. Lizzie knows better than to trust him, but somehow, he manages to worm his way into James's favor. With Hitler Youth menacing them, Lizzie can do little more than pray that Phillip doesn't get them all shot. Soon though, Lizzie learns her prayers aren't always answered the way she expects. God might actually plan for them to live under Nazi rule...forever.

The Communist victories in Cambodia and Vietnam in 1975 end a long and devastating war, but for some, the new era is one of persecution. Quan, a boy, and his family are sent by the Khmer Rouge to a collective farm along the Thai border. Minh Chau, a young girl, is imprisoned with her mother and older sister. When Quan and Minh Chau later meet in a refugee camp in Malaysia, Quan becomes the young girl's protector. When he must use violence to save her from an attack, he loses his chance to come with her to Canada. In Quebec City, Mathieu Hibou, a university student, helps Minh Chau and her family integrate into Canadian society before leaving to work as a development worker in Africa. Several years later, Mathieu suffers an unimaginable loss during the Rwandan genocide, a loss that Minh Chau will help to heal. Quan finds his way illegally to Canada and meets Minh Chau again. Through friendship and love, all three help one another overcome the pain of their pasts and live life to its fullest.

Together, 2nd Edition: An Inspiring Response to the "Separate-But-Equal" Supreme Court Decision that Divided America

The inspiring story of how Keith Plessy and Phoebe Ferguson, descendants of key figures in the infamous Supreme Court case Plessy v. Ferguson, have come together to fight for racial equality. Keith Plessy and Phoebe Ferguson were both born in New Orleans in 1957. Sixty-five years earlier, in 1892, a member of each of their families met in a Louisiana courtroom when Judge John Howard Ferguson found that Homer Plessy could be charged with breaking the law by sitting in a train car for white passengers. The case of Plessy v. Ferguson went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, which ruled that “separate-but-equal” was constitutional, sparking decades of unjust laws and discriminatory attitu...

The Cambridge Companion to the French Novel

This volume offers a unique and valuable insight into the novel in French over the past two centuries. In a series of essays, acknowledged experts discuss a variety of topics including nineteenth-century realism, women and fiction, popular fiction, experiment and innovation, war and the Holocaust, the Francophone novel, and postmodern fiction. They offer a challenging reassessment of major figures, while deliberately reading traditional views of literary history against the grain. Theoretical discussion is combined with close reading of texts and exploration of context, comparison with other genres and other literatures, and reference to novels from earlier periods. This companionable introduction includes a chronology and guide to further reading. From it emerges a strong sense of the vitality and energy of the modern French novel, and of the debates surrounding it.
