La Guerra dels Segadors es va viure de manera ben diferent a Tortosa i a la capital del Principat. Mentre que els dirigents de la Generalitat i el Consell de Cent apostaven per Lluís XIII de França com a garant de les llibertats del país, Tortosa restava fidel a la monarquia espanyola. Aquesta divergència d'estratègies va suscitar ja en aquell moment una guerra propagandística entre un i altre bàndol. La visió historiogràfica hereva del Romanticisme i de la Renaixença, amb un fort component patriòtic i simbòlic, no va entendre mai la postura tortosina, considerada sovint "anticatalana".
