In Book 28 Ammianus describes the military activity of Valentinian on the Rhine. The historian speaks with admiration about his efforts to strengthen the northwestern border of the empire. He shows a similar esteem for the general Theodosius, who re-established order in Britain. However, in the greater part of Book 28 there is an air of gloom. Ammianus writes reluctantly about the judicial terror inflicted on the Roman aristocracy by powerful magistrates. In his digression about Roman manners he speaks with contempt about the senatorial elite and the Roman plebs, because they fail to live up to the standards of their ancestors. The final chapter illustrates the disastrous effects of the mismanagement of the province of Tripolis by corrupt officials.
Emperors and Historiography
This volume contains scholarly articles by professor Dani l den Hengst, in which structural and intertextual aspects of Roman historiographical texts are studied. Special attention is given to the "Historia Augusta" and Ammianus Marcellinus' "Res Gestae," but also relevant texts by Cicero, Livy, Quintilian and Suetonius are discussed.

Ammian gilt als der größte Historiker der Spätantike. Doch seine geographisch-ethnographischen Exkurse über Gallien, Ägypten, Persien und über nomadische Fremdvölker wie Sarazenen, Alanen und Hunnen wurden lange als imitierte Gelehrsamkeit und überflüssige Unterbrechung des Geschichtsverlaufs unterschätzt. In den klassischen Lehren der Rhetorik, der metaphorischen Lesung der Landschaften, der Konstituierung von Erinnerungsräumen und Gegenwelten zum Imperium Romanum deckt die Autorin den Schlüssel für das Verständnis des Gesamtwerks auf: Geschichtsverständnis und Diskurse über geographisches Wissen bedingen einander. Dadurch erscheint auch Ammians schriftstellerische Leistung in einem neuen Licht. So gewinnt der Leser einerseits eine Fülle von gesichertem Forschungswissen über die unbekannten ‚Ränder der antiken Welt' und nimmt andererseits die Exkurse nicht länger als schmückendes Beiwerk der Haupthandlung wahr, sondern als sinnkonstituierende Partien innerhalb dieser.
