Return to the Reich

The remarkable story of Fred Mayer, a German-born Jew who escaped Nazi Germany only to return as an American commando on a secret mission behind enemy lines. Growing up in Germany, Freddy Mayer witnessed the Nazis' rise to power. When he was sixteen, his family made the decision to flee to the United States--they were among the last German Jews to escape, in 1938. In America, Freddy tried enlisting the day after Pearl Harbor, only to be rejected as an "enemy alien" because he was German. He was soon recruited to the OSS, the country's first spy outfit before the CIA. Freddy, joined by Dutch Jewish refugee Hans Wynberg and Nazi defector Franz Weber, parachuted into Austria as the leader of Op...

QueerBeograd Cabaret

The clandestine festival QueerBeograd created spaces of critique and transformation in order to foster a politics of interconnectedness. Ivana Marjanovi explores the festival's transnational activist cabaret between 2006 and 2008, which was devised, directed and produced by Jet Moon, a founding member of the QueerBeograd collective. This pioneering study demonstrates how the process of staging QueerBeograd Cabaret created a shared space between queer, anti-fascism and No Borders politics, contributing to the advancement of the intersectionality perspective beyond identity. The study thus investigates historical genealogies of gender and political difference in the former and post-Yugoslav space, bringing these into relation with global social and art movements.

Students are introduced to the links between strategic management and strategizing processes on the one hand and organizational politics and power relations on the other. The book integrates concerns about ethics and globalization, and corporate social responsibility and sustainability, to provide a provocative and critically engaged approach to understanding strategy in the post-financial crisis world.

Teens Have Style!

Authors Sharon Snow and Yvonne Reed present fashion as a way to offer a fun and interesting program for teens in the library—and not just for girls. Today's fashion-savvy teenaged guys are just as likely to be eager participants. Teens Have Style!: Fashion Programs for Young Adults at the Library provides an easy-to-follow template for creating popular programs within the public or school library setting that will capture the attention of most teenaged girls. In Teens Have Style!, librarians will find programs they can adapt to their individual style or specific age range of their younger patrons, such as getting ready for the prom, making jewelry, decorating sneakers, creating a "green" outfit from recycled materials, and many more. All of the ideas are flexible and can be matched to other educational programs or to fit the library's needs, regardless of its size. For example, school librarians can partner with art teachers to orchestrate a "Fashion as Art" program, which challenges students to identify a painting that they like and then to create an outfit that reflects the style and feel of that work of art.
