Legendary Locals of Greene County
Greene County was created in 1800 from parts of Albany and Ulster Counties, and it is named after Gen. Nathanael Greene of Revolutionary War fame. Early on, the economy of the county was primarily agricultural with a few small mills and most of the settlements located along the Hudson River and its tributaries. In the early 19th century, the economy took off: people from New England began settling the mountains to the west, the Susquehanna Turnpike opened, leather tanning and brick- and pottery-making became prominent, ice was harvested and shipped to New York City, ship-building gained importance, and tourism started to be popular. Today, tourism is still important to the area, and the county features two major ski resorts. Much of Greene County is also part of the Catskill Mountain Park, which attracts many nature-lovers all year round. Over the years, county natives and transplants have made many contributions to industry, entertainment, government, military, recreation, and the arts.
The Descendants of Roger Mills (1746-1809)
Roger Mills was born in Connecticut in 1747. He married three times to Mary Webster, Abigail Griswold, and Elizabeth Fitch. He was the father of twelve children. He later moved into New York state. Information on his descendants is included in this volume. Descendants continue to reside in New York, Colorado, Florida, Kansas and elsewhere. Some descendants may be members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

History of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, 1939-1980
A chronicle of the second 50 years in the life of the American School (originally founded in 1881). Conceived as a companion volume to Louis Lord's 1947 history of the first half century, the text outlines the activities of the School both in Greece and in the United States, beginning with an absorbing account of the affairs of the School during World War II and continuing through the Centennial in 1981, with chapters on the Summer Session, the School's excavations, its publications, and the Gennadeion. The extensive appendixes include lists of all the Trustees, Cooperating Institutions, members of the Managing Committee, staff, fellows, and members of the School since its inception in 1881, and add greatly to the usefulness of this volume. The author's first-hand knowledge of the people and events of the period discussed contributes materially to its depth and detail.
Picturesque and Sublime
Thomas Cole (1801-1848) is widely acknowledged as the founder of American landscape painting. Born in England, Cole emigrated in 1818 to the United States, where he transformed British and continental European traditions to create a distinctive American idiom.
