Dancing Protein Clouds: Intrinsically Disordered Proteins in the Norm and Pathology, Part C

Dancing Protein Clouds: Intrinsically Disordered Proteins in the Norm and Pathology, Part C, Volume 183 represents a set of selected studies on a variety of research topics related to intrinsically disordered proteins. Topics in this volume include discussions on the evolution of disorder, consideration of the peculiarities of phase separation of the prion protein, a general discussion of the relationships between intrinsic disorder and protein functions, coverage of the structural and functional characterization of several important intrinsically disordered proteins, such as transcription factors, outer membrane porins, trans-membrane and membrane associated proteins with ID regions, discussion of molecular simulations of IDPs, and much more. Provides recent studies on the intrinsically disordered proteins and their functions, along with the involvement of intrinsically disordered proteins in the pathogenesis of various diseases Contains numerous illustrative materials (color figures, diagrams and tables) to help readers delve into the information provided Includes contributions from recognized experts in the field

Tourette Syndrome

Tourette syndrome (TS) has become increasingly recognised within society and has gained scientific interest worldwide. Knowledge of its clinical presentation, mechanisms of disease, and available treatment approaches has increased remarkably over the last two decades. Likewise, the way clinicians, teachers, social care workers, and families face the problems manifested by patients with TS is rapidly evolving. Tourette Syndrome, edited by Davide Martino and James F. Leckman, offers a unique opportunity to capture this knowledge advance through a comprehensive and up-to-date overview. Tourette Syndrome covers all the main aspects related to TS, analyzing its complex clinical presentation, the novel viewpoints of causes and mechanisms, state-of-the-art assessment techniques, and the diversity of treatment options. Multidisciplinarity is the main asset of this volume, which represents a source of consultation for a wide audience of professionals, integrated with video tutorials related to particularly complex areas of patient management. Medical and PhD students, as well as post-doctoral scientists, will be able to use the volume as a valuable learning source.

In 1791, the French femme de lettres Olympe de Gouges wrote that 'as women have the right to take their places on the scaffold, they must also have the right to take their seats in government'. This book explores the issues of female emancipation through the history of female execution, from the burning of Joan of Arc in 1431 to the events of the French revolution. Concentrating on individual victims, the author addresses the sexual attitudes and prejudices encountered by women condemned to death. She examines the horrific treatment of those denounced as witches and reveals the gruesome reality of death by hanging, burning or the guillotine. In an attempt to uncover the historical truth behind such figures as Joan of Arc, Anne Boleyn, Manon Roland and Charlotte Corday, she goes beyond biography to consider their deaths in symbolic terms. She also considers writers such as Genet, Yourcenar and Brecht and their treatment of the tragic, sacrificial and erotic aspects of female execution.
