Autobiography of Dexter Ronald Kruger, the oldest man to ever live in Australia. Born on 13th January 1910, my life has spanned what is probably the most interesting period in the history of the world; from 'man' and 'horse' power, to all this modern technology where little man-power is needed. I have had an extraordinarily long working life, although I was never a very strong person. My claim is that, with the physical strength of half a man, I have done the work of a man and a half. I have maintained reasonably good health and now, at the age of 111 years and 124 days, I am the oldest person in Australia, the oldest man to have ever lived in Australia, and number seven in the list of the world's oldest living men. I hope what I have written will give the reader some indication of what my life was like on the land. I was determined to succeed in the industry of my choice and I think I can claim a great measure of success, and always doing what I enjoyed doing in the process.

The following will give the reader a good understanding of what my life and times has been like. Born on 13th January 1910, I have lived for the last 111 years. My life has spanned what is probably the most interesting period in the history of the world. I have seen drought, fire, flood, two World Wars, the Great Depression, the Spanish Flu and Covid-19; as well as the great influx of migrants, mainly from Italy and Greece, which changed the Australian demographic from "white Australia" to a multicultural society. During my lifespan, the Australian population has increased from just over 4 million in 1910 to over 25 million today in 2021. I have had my cattle herds decimated with the diseases brucellosis, tuberculosis, plural pneumonia, tick fever and the great eradication program that would eradicate those for diseases from Australia. I have also seen numerous very low prices for my produce. Through all these vicissitudes, I have prospered - why? Well, whether the weather was wet, or whether the weather was dry, I have weathered the weather, whatever the weather, whether it was wet or dry.

Now back in Brisbane, John met up with a host of the characters who worked at the saleyards - stockmen, buyers, agents, clerks, butchers, contractors, a stock inspector, a journalist and a market reporter as well as a vendor who sold cattle there in 1933, and recorded all their stories to come up with REMEMBER CANNON HILL, a lively and sometimes humorous record of what really went on out there during the 60 years that the saleyards served the industry. If you have ever had anything to do with Cannon Hill, you or your family might well be in this book, but even if you have never heard of the place, you will have fun finding out about our heritage and what life was like in the those days, as told by the people who were there and who still remember.
