Through the broad perspective of the systems theory, the sociobiology of self-renewal and the use of historical-critical research, this book explores the process of continuous dying and re-birth occurring daily in American society, in every society. Conceptualizing the media and communications technology as the collective nervous system of a society can help us in understanding the above-mentioned 'renewing' process. Of interest to professors and students of mass communications, government and public pol information science.
Fifty-odd years have elapsed since the first observation of the response of visceral smooth muscle to an adenine nucleotide was reported by Drury and Szent Gyorgi (1929). It is now known that purinergic receptors mediating responses to adenosine and the adenine nucleotides (AMP, ADP and ATP) are present in all types of visceral smooth muscle. Adenine itself and other endogenous purine derivatives appear to have no direct effects, or only minimal effects, on most visceral smooth muscles. Airway smooth muscle is an exception in this regard, and responds to purine bases and non-adenine nucleosides and nucleotides. Knowledge of the distribution of purinergic receptor sites on the plasma membrane...

This volume contains the proceedings of the International Workshop on Diophantine Methods, Lattices, and Arithmetic Theory of Quadratic Forms. The articles cover the arithmetic theory of quadratic forms and lattices, as well as the effective Diophantine analysis with height functions.
The nitrates have remarkable clinical effects that have stood the test of time in the management of ischemic heart disease. What is unusual about this class of com pounds is that, after many years of clinical use, we are still exploring new avenues as to the vascular mechanisms of their effect, their applications in treating other clini cal conditions, and the development of products with more favorable pharmacoki netic properties. This volume represents the proceedings of a symposium held June 14-16, 1984, in Montreux. The papers were selected to explore the current state of knowledge re garding the mechanisms of action, pharmacokinetics, and clinical efficacy of ni trates. Particular atten...

The Thirty Years’ War (1618-1648) lies at the intersection of early modern and modern times. Frequently portrayed as the concluding chapter of the Reformation, it also points to the future by precipitating fundamental changes in the military, legal, political, religious, economic, and cultural arenas that came to mark a new, the modern era. Prompted by the 400th anniversary of the outbreak of the war, the contributors reconsider the event itself and contextualize it within the broader history of the Reformation, military conflicts, peace initiatives, and negotiations of war.
