Antisemitic Elements in the Critique of Capitalism in German Culture, 1850-1933
This volume examines selected works of German literature from Gustav Freytag to Joseph Goebbels in relation to ethical, socio-economic, and political texts from the economic «take off» period in the middle of the nineteenth century up to the rise of National Socialism and investigates two aspects of anti-Semitic anti-capitalistic representations contained therein. First it traces how the Jews gained the dubious distinction of being the inventors, even embodiment, of capitalism and elaborates on negative traits assigned to both of them. Second it examines how representations of specifically Jewish capitalists were instrumentalized both to discredit laissez faire and simultaneously to assist in the definition of a specifically «German» socio-economic ethos.
Shylock's Revenge
Analyzes the development of antisemitism from the early Renaissance to Nazism. Traces the figures of Shylock and of Ahasuerus, the Wandering Jew, in literary works and stage presentations, showing that they reflect changing attitudes to Jews. Suggests that Shakespeare's Shylock embodies all the traditional stereotypes of the Jew, such as bloodthirstiness and avarice. The plot of "The Merchant of Venice" is based on the interplay of bourgeois, aristocrat, and Jew, a triangle that recurs in history and in literature (e.g. in the Dreyfus Affair and in Gustav Freytag's "Soll und Haben"). Examines variations of the model in Disraeli and Marx, and the identification of Jews with any hated class or with all of them simultaneously, as in Nazism. Antisemitism was reinforced by the Church's allegations, after the French Revolution, of a world Jewish conspiracy, and by racist ideology. All these elements met in Hitler's vision of extirpating the strangers from society in order to return to pre-capitalist brotherhood. An Index to Periodical Literature on the Apostle Paul
The volume updates an important earlier work by Bruce M. Metzger, "Index to Periodical Literature on the Apostle Paul" first published in 1960, which undertook to list periodical materials available before 1960. This volume was the first book in the "New Testament Tools and Studies" series published by Brill. As with Metzger's volume, this new work lists periodicals in a wide spectrum of languages, including English and Russian. This volume adds considerably to the 3,013 entries of Metzger's original work. To facilitate use, the original classification and numbering scheme developed by Metzger is retained in the new references (as well as in a few from a second edition by Metzger, 1970). They are inserted in their proper classification (by subject and date) and are indicated by the original number with an alpha extension. In a few instances, new classifications are offered, e.g. 'structuralism'.
