Interview of Dina Hansma conducted by Albert Winkler on January 30, 2002. A cassette tape and a 34 page typescript of the interview. Hansma's 3 page account called "War Memories of a Child" is included. Hansma discusses how the German occupation of World War II affected her life in the Netherlands. She was eight years old when the war began and thirteen when it ended. Her Jewish neighbors were taken away in trucks. German soldiers came to her house to take food and made her march at gunpoint to get beer. One German soldier came to use her piano. She took care of the garden; it was too dangerous for adults to garden. She also slipped into the German lines twice a week to get milk. At the end of her biography she writes, "Though I was only 13 years old when peace came I had functioned on an adult level for so long, that I could not step back and be a child."

A Room of His Own

The world of Saul Bellow is peopled largely by men, often intellectuals, who manifest Bellow's unique conception of American masculinity. In this timely analysis of the Bellow oeuvre from a feminist perspective, Gloria Cronin offers a stunning and insightful critique of the Nobel Prizewinning novelist. Drawing on her comprehensive knowledge of Western thought and Western philosophical tradition, Cronin also incorporates the brilliant insights of French feminist theory on Western male philosophers into her critique. Cronin's mastery of these intellectual traditions informs her fruitful examination of Bellow's explicit dialogue, rich consideration of his "misogyny," and the many masculinities ...

Abraham Cahan

"In Abraham Cahan, Sanford E. Marovitz relates in telling detail Cahan's rise from green newspaperman to discriminating novelist and shrewd editor of the daily Yiddish Forward. After a difficult start, Cahan, a founder of the Forward, edited the paper for nearly 50 years, bringing its circulation to an impressive quarter million during its heyday in the early 1920s. An ardent advocate of assimilation, Cahan saw the Forward as a means of acculturating newly arrived Jewish immigrants to America and helping them gain economic stability." "Although Cahan was first and last a newspaperman, he wrote what is still considered one of the best fictional accounts of the American immigrant experience: T...

Charged Particles in Oncology

High-energy charged particles represent a cutting-edge technique in radiation oncology. Protons and carbon ions are used in several centers all over the world for the treatment of different solid tumors. Typical indications are ocular malignancies, tumors of the base of the skull, hepatocellular carcinomas and various sarcomas. The physical characteristics of the charged particles (Bragg peak) allow sparing of much more normal tissues than it is possible using conventional X-rays, and for this reason all pediatric tumors are considered eligible for protontherapy. Ions heavier than protons also display special radiobiological characteristics, which make them effective against radioresistant a...
