The Back Part of Germantown
That part of Philadelphia known today as Chestnut Hill, & in the early 18th century as "the hindermost part" or the "back part" of Germantown Township, includes within its boundaries the divisions of Sommerhausen & Crefeld, which formed the northernmost section of the original German township as laid out in 1684. It was 20 years or more after the first settlement in the lower part of the township before permanent improvements were established in Sommerhausen & Crefeld. This local history includes numerous mentions of individuals, families & events in this community during the 18th century. Here is a genealogical sketch of the Michael Schutz family of Chestnut Hill using the entire community as backdrop.

Case studies of private art collections recorded during the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries in Mantua. This work seeks to show how the collectors' taste changed during this period and how these changes are reflected in the collections' display, and also seeks to contribute to the understanding of the original context of works of art in sixteenth and early seventeenth century private houses in a courtly city.

Gently into the Light
As he nears the end of a long and full life, Angus McDonald finds his mind ranging widely, bringing up some thoughts he would rather avoid. He is kept awake at night, tormented by the dark and violent history of the country he loves, South Africa. In recalling both his own life and those of his forbears he is reminded of instances of cruelty and inhumanity that Angus - a self-confessed "man of peace" - finds highly disturbing. Yet ultimately it is Angus' sense of wonder at the beauty of the world and at the processes that have helped shape it over unimaginable periods of time that comes to dominate his thinking. Through his career as a geographer he has been able to pursue his interests in geology, palaeo-anthropology, meteorology, biology and history?and he looks forward to being able to pursue them further in the life to come.
