For most, and particularly the injured and the wounded, being shot down over Occupied Europe during the Second World War meant that capture was immediate, that imprisonment was almost inevitable. For some, evasion was possible, but rarely for long. For a relative handful, however, their evasion saw them eventually reach home once again. In this fascinating insight into how some Allied aircrew achieved the almost impossible and evade capture, the renowned aviation historian Martin W. Bowman has drawn together a set of tales of just some of these individuals. They are stories that illustrate the bravery and resourcefulness that characterized their experiences. British, American, Canadian and o...

For Authorized Eyes Only: The Retirement Project

Escaping Rochester’s harsh winter, Billy and Beth Brook fly to Miami to celebrate their anniversary. No sooner do they touch the ground than their rental car is rear-ended, but this is no simple fender bender. Things get ugly fast. Guns are drawn and the Brooks narrowly escape their assailants. Despite everyone’s insistence that the couple have stumbled into Miami’s drug trade, Billy and Beth suspect that something more is going on. After they learn that an Englishman whom they met on the flight down was killed in an identical rental car and other bodies begin to fall, it becomes clear that they have become embroiled in a conspiracy much deeper than they thought—a conspiracy that soon extends to the covert corridors of power in Washington and sends this average couple running for their lives. Who can they trust? And can they expose the plot before it’s too late?

The Making of James Agee

"In The Making of James Agee, Hugh Davis takes a comprehensive look at Agee's career, showing the interrelatedness of his concerns as a writer. A full view of Agee's oeuvre, Davis argues, illuminates its deeply political nature and reveals a debt to various sources, particularly European surrealism, that have been little noted by previous Agee scholars." "Davis challenges the view of Agee that has persisted since his death - that he is best understood primarily as a romantic individualist at odds with convention and the literary mainstream - and argues that this myth was largely constructed by friends and associates who were so immersed in the tenets of modernism that they distorted Agee's w...

Black Thursday Blood and Oil

“A highly readable account of the early stages of the USAAF air war over Western Europe” from the author of Confounding the Reich (The Bulletin). This book describes the period when the American daylight offensive faltered and nearly failed and recalls the terrible losses suffered by Liberators on the low-level attack on the Ploesti oilfields in Romania and by the B-17s on the notorious Schweinfurt and Regensburg raids which entered 8th Air Force folklore as “Black Thursday.” Fascinating anecdotes, eye-witness accounts and the hard-won experiences of the battle-scarred American “fly-boys” reveal the grim realities of air combat at four miles high above enemy occupied Europe, Berl...

This is a study of the historical, environmental, cultural, and organizational geography of Wyoming. Although concerned with the spectrum of economic, political, and social functions and activities, Dr. Brown emphasizes the political realm and submits that what people do with and on the landscape is almost entirely the result of institutional decis
