Periodical Press and Colonial Modernity

Periodical Press and Colonial Modernity

The late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries witnessed the emergence of colonial modernity in Odisha through the genre of the periodical press. How did the modernity project evolve in colonial Odisha? What were its contours? Was this modernity entirely consensual, or was it contested in the pages of the periodicals through an alternative modernity? This book addresses these and other questions about a forgotten chapter of India's intellectual history. Tracing the growth and decline of the Odia periodical press, the book studies its interface with colonial/alternative modernity in the region. It explores various aspects of two pioneering Odia magazines--the newspaper journal Utkal Dipika and the literary journal Utkal Sahitya--their economic and political bases, their patronage systems, the cultural and ideological backgrounds of their editors, and the role these journals played in shaping the Odia literary sensibility and identity. It shows how the periodical press shaped ideas and the material culture of the region and, in turn, got metamorphosed by the play of contemporary cultural and ideological forces.

Recent advances in stem cell biology, nanotechnology and gene therapy have opened new avenues for therapeutics. The availability of molecular therapeutics that rely on the delivery of DNA, RNA or proteins, harnessing enhanced delivery with nanoparticles, and the regenerative potential of stem cells (adult, embryonic or induced pluripotent stem cells) has had a tremendous impact on translational medicine. The chapters in this book cover a range of strategies for molecular and cellular therapies for human disease, their advantages, and central challenges to their widespread application. Potential solutions to these issues are also discussed in detail. Further, the book addresses numerous advances in the field of molecular therapeutics that will be of interest to the general scientific community. Lastly, the book provides specific examples of disease conditions for which these strategies have been transferred to the clinic. As such, it will be extremely useful for all students, researchers and clinicians working in the field of translational medicine and molecular therapeutics.

It’s no secret that certain social groups have predominated India’s business and trading history, with business traditionally being the preserve of particular ‘Bania’ communities. However, the past four or so decades have seen a widening of the social base of Indian capital, such that the social profile of Indian business has expanded beyond recognition, and entrepreneurship and commerce in India are no longer the exclusive bastion of the old mercantile castes. In this meticulously researched book – acclaimed for being the first social history to document and understand India’s new entrepreneurial groups – Harish Damodaran looks to answer who the new ‘wealth creators’ are, as he traces the transitional entry of India’s middle and lower peasant castes into the business world. Combining analytical rigour with journalistic flair, India’s New Capitalists is an essential read for anyone seeking to understand the culture and evolution of business in contemporary South Asia.

The Lost World of Sarala Devi

The Lost World of Sarala Devi

Sarala Devi was a multifaceted personality. Not only was she a poet, novelist, translator, and critic of great distinction, but also a freedom fighter, feminist, activist, social reformer, and educator. She made significant contributions to building a modern Odisha and to the use of literature for social critique and transformation. She advocated a larger role for women in the public sphere. Despite her prolific oeuvre, her work has completely disappeared from the public domain. This collection fills the gap by tracing her historiography through its compilation of some of her best writings, translated from the original Odiya. These include prose, fiction, short stories, plays, and tales for children. The work stands at the intersection of gender, translation, and cultural history in the interdisciplinary context and contributes significantly to the making of Indian feminism.
