The Beast in the Mosquito
The correspondence between Sir Ronald Ross (1857-1932) and Sir Patrick Manson (1844-1922) is rich in both scientific and human terms. It records, in great detail, Ross's research in India between 1895 and 1899, which elucidated the role of mosquitoes in the transmission of malaria, work for which Ross was awarded the 1902 Nobel Prize for Medicine or Physiology. Ross described the mosquito-transmission theory as Manson's 'Grand Induction', and he had returned to India, where he was an officer in the Indian Medical Service, having been primed by Manson. Kniha se věnuje vývoji zdravotnictví v Evropě a částečně i jinde ve světě, čtenář zde najde především přehled činů, které vedly zdravotnictví dopředu. Nejedná se o další dějiny medicíny a už vůbec ne o dějiny některého z lékařských oborů, ale o širší pohled na události, které ovlivňovaly vývoj disciplín ovlivňujících zdraví lidí. Text je proložen životopisy několika osobností ze světa, které se velmi zasloužily o rozvoj zdravotnictví. V této podobě ještě u nás žádná kniha na toto téma nevyšla. Jistě po této knize rádi sáhnou mnozí z těch, kdo se zajímají o dějiny, které zajímá historie zdravotnictví a chtějí se o ní něco, alespoň ve zkratce, dozvědět. Mnoho zatím pro ně neznámého zde mohou objevit i studenti zdravotnických oborů, čtenáři pracující ve zdravotnictví a rozšíření znalostí by neškodilo ani těm, kdo o budoucnosti zdravotnictví rozhodují. Případným zájemcům o podrobnější informace o určitém období či události lze doporučit nahlédnutí do některé z knih uvedených v přehledu literatury.
