Translations are crucial to the flow of themes, images, forms and ideas across boundaries. They constitute a special case of cultural dynamics as, in a sense, they are existing texts revived in a new form. The introduction of textual works in a target culture involves a high degree of strategy and control. These moments of control, selection and influence deserve special attention in cultural, receptional, and translation-historical studies. The essays in this yearbook address aspects of the central topic: the impact of translations on cultural-historical developments in Europe. First and foremost is the question which works were selected and why, and next which were neglected and why. In a ...

Fractional Dynamics

This volume provides the latest developments in the field of fractional dynamics, which covers fractional (anomalous) transport phenomena, fractional statistical mechanics, fractional quantum mechanics and fractional quantum field theory. The contributors are selected based on their active and important contributions to their respective topics. This volume is the first of its kind that covers such a comprehensive range of topics in fractional dynamics. It will point out to advanced undergraduate and graduate students, and young researchers the possible directions of research in this subject. In addition to those who intend to work in this field and those already in the field, this volume will also be useful for researchers not directly involved in the field, but want to know the current status and trends of development in this subject. This latter group includes theoretical chemists, mathematical biologists and engineers.

Structural Approaches to Sequence Evolution

Recent advances in understanding the thermodynamics of macromolecules, the topological properties of gene networks, the organization and mutation capabilities of genomes, and the structure of populations make it possible to incorporate these key elements into a broader and deeply interdisciplinary view of molecular evolution. This book gives an account of such a new approach, through clear tutorial contributions by leading scientists.

The Clarinet in Spain

This book is the first monograph about clarinet and wind music in Spain, studying the professionalisation of the Spanish clarinettists from the early 19th century. The social, academic and professional environment of wind musicians are addressed here through the case study of clarinettist, teacher, composer and deputy bandmaster of the Municipal Wind Band of Madrid, Miguel Yuste Moreno (1870-1947). An analysis and study of the national and international influences on the Spanish clarinet repertoire is offered here, especially, the premiere of Brahms's chamber music for clarinet.

Voice of the Leopard

In Voice of the Leopard: African Secret Societies and Cuba, Ivor L. Miller shows how African migrants and their political fraternities played a formative role in the history of Cuba. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, no large kingdoms controlled Nigeria and Cameroon's multilingual Cross River basin. Instead, each settlement had its own lodge of the initiation society called Ékpè, or "leopard," which was the highest indigenous authority. Ékpè lodges ruled local communities while also managing regional and long-distance trade. Cross River Africans, enslaved and forcibly brought to colonial Cuba, reorganized their Ékpè clubs covertly in Havana and Matanzas into a mutual-aid ...
