Ketika meninggal 30 Oktober 2019 dalam usia 87 tahun, Prof. Dr. Henry Alexis Rudolf Tilaar (Prof Tilaar) meninggalkan warisan berharga untuk bangsa ini khususnya di bidang kependidikan. Ratusan doktor dan sarjana pendidikan, ribuan bahkan ratusan ribu, mungkin jutaan anak menjadi “orang” karena sentuhan tangannya sebagai pendidik (guru atau dosen). Puluhan buku—ketebalan umumnya minimal 300 halaman—terbit dari pengalaman, refleksi, pemikiran, komitmen dan kecintaannya sebagai guru di jenjang pendidikan dasar dan menengah, dosen dan guru besar di pendidikan tinggi. Terdukung jabatan-jabatan birokratisnya di Bappenas dan lembaga pendidikan tinggi Universitas Negeri Jakarta, warisan itu niscaya sangat berarti; tidak hanya warisan tentang masa lalu praksis pendidikan di negeri ini tetapi juga bahan belajar bagi banyak orang, utamanya para pengambil kebijakan pendidikan di masa sesudahnya.
