Damn the Revolution!
All throughout history, people have praised revolutions as one of the ways to remedy their lack of freedom and abolish the unearned privileges of others. Revolutions, however, pervert their very aims by bringing uncontrollable anarchy, atrocities, revenge, loss of human talent and destruction of material resources. Their attempts to rebuild society in more human terms always fail miserably. In practice, most revolutions can only be stopped by the emergence of a dictator, which brings about more misery, lack of freedom and inequality that what caused the upheaval in the first place. That's why most people end up disillusioned with the hopeless romance of building a better society by revolting, and end up shouting: Damn the Revolution !
Cuban Communism
Forty-six essays, presented by avowedly anti-Castro editors and gathered mostly from US journals and books of the past couple decades, are organized into five sections devoted to the history, economy, society, military, and polity of Cuba. Some of the specific topics treated include: Cuban and Soviet relations; decentralization, local government, and participation; economic policies and strategies for the 1990s; the politics of sports; political and military relations; and forecasting institutional changes after Castro. The Subject of Revolution
From television to travel bans, geopolitics to popular dance, The Subject of Revolution explores how knowledge about the 1959 Cuban Revolution was produced and how the Revolution in turn shaped new worldviews. Drawing on sources from over twenty archives as well as film, music, theater, and material culture, this book traces the consolidation of the Revolution over two decades in the interface between political and popular culture. The "subject of Revolution," it proposes, should be understood as the evolving synthesis of the imaginaries constructed by its many "subjects," including revolutionary leaders, activists, academics, and ordinary people within and beyond the island's borders. The book reopens some of the questions that have long animated debates about Cuba, from the relationship between populace and leadership to the archive and its limits, while foregrounding the construction of popular understandings. It argues that the politicization of everyday life was an inescapable effect of the revolutionary process as well as the catalyst for new ways of knowing and being.
