This volume addresses the intriguing issue of indirect reports from an interdisciplinary perspective. The contributors include philosophers, theoretical linguists, socio-pragmaticians, and cognitive scientists. The book is divided into four sections following the provenance of the authors. Ma per decidere chi ha ragione su questioni di lingua non basta avere forti preferenze ideologiche: occorre essere davvero competenti su come essa funziona, e sui veri modi in cui influenza il nostro modo di pensare. Sono in corso diverse guerre per il controllo dell'italiano. Da sempre, chi riesce a controllare la lingua decide in buona parte ciò che penserà la gente. Oggi, nell'epoca dei social network, intervenire non è piú il privilegio di pochi opinion leader, ma chiunque, anche da incompetente, può partecipare e vincere delle battaglie. Questo libro affronta il modo in cui gli italiani si pongono rispetto alla «difesa dell'italiano dall'inglese», e riguardo alle battaglie sul presunto sessismo del lessico e della grammatica. La sua tesi centrale è che per decidere su tali questioni non basti avere delle forti preferenze ideologiche, ma occorra una competenza non superficiale sul funzionamento della lingua, e perciò sui veri modi in cui essa influenza il nostro modo di pensare.

Information Structure and its Interfaces
The volume presents recent results in the field of Information Structure based on research on Italian and Italian dialects, and on further studies on several typologically different languages. The central idea is that Information Structure is not an exclusive matter of syntax but an interface issue which involves the interplay of at least the phonological, morpho-syntactic and semantic-pragmatic levels of analysis. In addition, the volume is based on the study of actual language use and it adopts a cross-linguistic point of view.
Insubordination
The phenomenon of insubordination can be defined diachronically as the recruitment of main clause structures from subordinate structures, or synchronically as the independent use of constructions exhibiting characteristics of subordinate clauses. Long marginalised as uncomfortable exceptions, insubordinated clause phenomena turn out to be surprisingly widespread, and provide a vital empirical testing ground for various central theoretical issues in current linguistics – the interplay of langue and parole, the emergence of structure, the question of where productive syntactic rules give way to constructions, the role of prosody in language change, and the question of how far grammars are produced by isolated speakers as opposed to being collaboratively constructed in dialogue. When Data Challenges Theory

Discourse Segmentation in Romance Languages
This volume gathers together for the first time contributions from the most relevant approaches in discourse segmentation developed in the last fifteen years in Romance languages. All these approaches share the assumption that discourses (either oral or written) can be fully divided into units and subunits: just like sentences are fully analyzed with the help of Syntax, discourse can be fully analyzed with the help of Pragmatics. In this sense, the approaches in this volume represent a step forward with respect to the issues in segmentation addressed by Conversational Analysis or by Discourse Analysis.
