This book provides a framework for surveying and assessing derelict or contaminated land for possible re-use. It is based on the experience of government departments in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands which have sought to achieve the most effective treatment of ruined or abandoned industrial sites. Such areas often disfigure the landscape, and in extreme cases are hazardous to human life. However restoration is possible and the author cites successful examples, describing the legal framework within which it has taken place. The book provides valuable lessons for urban planners and land resource administrators.
