Stress and Animal Welfare provides students of animal biology with a fresh, integrated coverage of the concepts and scientific measurement of the welfare of animals. This book is the first to explain the basic biological principles of how animals actually cope with stress, and the major part of the work is devoted to explaining scientifically usable concepts in stress and welfare. A wide range of stress indicators are highlighted in detail with examples being drawn from man and other species. This information forms the basis for a synthesis of now ideas presented here for the first time. Among the issues covered are: •how physical systems are regulated by the body and brain; •limits to adaptation •assessing welfare for both short-term and long-term responses; •ethical problems and suggested solutionsProper assessment of animal welfare is essential so that informed decisions can be taken about what is morality acceptable in terms of practice and in the development of more effective legislation. This text encapsulates a very wide body of literature on scientific aspects of animal welfare, and will prove a valuable asset for students and teachers of animal biology.
This book focuses on essential aspects of the theoretical foundations that support blended learning (BL) as a teaching training modality in tertiary education. Analyzing the changes in the world of education that lead to new ways of thinking and learning, it redefines the concept of blended learning at a time of constant growth in many universities around the world. This involves a shared reflection on the role of technology in the current university teacher education programs, as well as on the role that pedagogy plays in increasingly technology-driven contexts. Furthermore, the book presents pedagogical approaches to guide university professors in the design and implementation of blended learning courses. To this end, it describes some of the major models and approaches to BL instructional design, and examines issues related to the quality of BL training and the indicators to measure it, in order to identify those models that contribute to a better understanding of the dimensions that increase its effectiveness.

This book presents a collection of state-of-the-art work in corpus-based interpreting studies, highlighting international research on the properties of interpreted speech, based on naturalistic interpreting data. Interpreting research has long been hampered by the lack of naturalistic data that would allow researchers to make empirically valid generalizations about interpreting. The researchers who present their work here have played a pioneering role in the compilation of interpreting data and in the exploitation of that data. The collection focuses on both of these aspects, including a detailed overview of interpreting corpora, a collective paper on the way forward in corpus compilation and several studies on interpreted speech in diverse language pairs and interpreter-mediated settings, based on existing corpora.
