Workshop on habitat mapping
This is the report of the workshop on habitat mapping held as part of the activities under the implementation of the Science Plan of the EAF-Nansen Programme “Supporting the application of the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries management considering climate and pollution impacts”. The workshop was held at the Hotel Abitart in Rome, Italy from 4 to 6 December 2018, with the main objectives of providing an overview of habitat mapping in the context of the EAF-Nansen Programme, reviewing and learning from past mapping experiences and modelling approaches and tools, and developing ‘best practice guidelines’ for exploratory habitat mapping and follow-up analyses in data poor waters.

Review of the implementation of the International Guidelines for the Management of Deep-sea Fisheries in the High Seas
The International Guidelines for the Management of Deep-sea Fisheries in the High Seas (DSF Guidelines) were adopted by FAO in 2008. [Author] The first and only review of the implementation of the Guidelines took place in 2010. [Author] There have been many advances in implementation since then and it is timely to conduct another review. [Author] The DSF Guidelines have been used to guide regional fisheries management organizations and states in the development of spatial management processes defining fishing grounds and protecting vulnerable marine ecosystems. [Author] The DSF Guidelines also require that harvested fish stocks and impacts on bycatch species are assessed and managed, but this has been less well implemented. [Author]

Cold-Water Corals and Ecosystems
Cold-water coral ecosystems figure the formation of large seabed structures such as reefs and giant carbonate mounds; they represent unexplored paleo-environmental archives of earth history. High Seas Governance
High Seas Governance: Gaps and Challenges identifies gaps in and challenges to the existing legal regime in the protection and preservation of the marine environment of the high seas, including sensitive marine areas. The gaps identified in the book include the failure of liability and compensation schemes to cover pollution of the high seas and the fact that no state has the responsibility to clean up pollution of the high seas. One common theme of the book is that it is necessary to identify a state other than flag states, port states or coastal states, which should have an obligation to exercise jurisdiction and control over certain activities on the high seas.
Responsible Fisheries in the Marine Ecosystem
This book addresses ecological and environmental issues associated with responsible and sustainable marine fisheries. It includes 22 chapters and has been developed from the Conference on Responsible Fisheries in the Marine Ecosystem held in Iceland in October 2001.
