Chronic kidney disease is a non-communicable disease that has experienced a global surge in incidence and prevalence over the past few decades, and it has been increasingly considered a major contributor to the global disease burden and mortality. In prior years, most of the awareness and treatment of patients with chronic kidney disease, particularly in the developed world, had focused on patients with end stage renal disease, one of the potential outcomes of chronic kidney disease. More recent epidemiological data has shown that the majority of the burden of chronic kidney disease occurs in patients who are in the earlier stages of this condition, prior to end stage renal disease. The opportunities to recognise the signs, symptoms, and complications, and to consider extant treatment paradigms are useful in the global environment (both in developed and developing nations). We are very happy to present this work, authored by an international panel of experts, as a useful addition and tool for the global efforts to address the burden of chronic kidney disease.

Depression in the Elderly

The world population is ageing and the prevalence of age-related neurological diseases, such as stroke and neurodegenerative diseases, are continuously increasing. These diseases lead not only to impairment of motor function but also to the development of non-motor disorders, such as depression. In this book, the authors present current research in the study of depression in the elderly. Topics discussed include the links between geriatric depression and dementia; the physiological, psychological, social and environmental factors related to depression; depression in older adults with chronic kidney disease and physical activity and its anti-depressant effects for older people with depression.

Albuminuria

Albuminuria

Albuminuria may not only serve as an early marker of advanced disease, but may also serve as a predictor of disease progression and poor outcome. This fact makes this book very crucial and timely. The book is composed of ten chapters written by experts from seven different countries. It is well classified to serve its purpose, divided in three broad sections. The first section deals with the clinical evaluation and implications of albuminuria. It also covers the molecular, cellular and biochemical basis of albuminuria. The second section is geared towards albuminuria noted in special clinical conditions; diabetic nephropathy, cardiovascular diseases, resistant hypertension and following renal transplantation and exercise. The third and final section covers albuminuria among the extremes of age; both the paediatric and the fastest growing elderly group.

Our culture is obsessed with design. Sometimes designers can fuse utility and fantasy to make the mundane appear fresh—a cosmetic repackaging of the same old thing. Because of this, medicine—grounded in the unforgiving realities of the scientific method and peer review, and of flesh, blood, and pain—can sometimes confuse “design” with mere “prettifying.” Design solves real problems, however. This collection of papers underwrites the importance of design for the MMVR community, within three different environments: in vivo, in vitro and in silico. in vivo: we design machines to explore our living bodies. Imaging devices, robots, and sensors move constantly inward, operating withi...
