Text Linguistics and Classical Studies
The work represents a significant scientific advancement on text linguistics from three different viewpoints. The first chapter provides an overview of the history of text linguistics from a broader perspective than usual, offering a complete reference framework. The second chapter presents the procedural approach to the study of text linguistics in a concise way, including a critical comparison with other perspectives. The third chapter constructs a very unusual bridge between theoretical linguistics and classical studies in that it takes a literary text in Latin from the early imperial period as its case study. This combination is rare, as theoretical linguists are usually oriented to modern languages and classicists are not generally inclined to the study of formal linguistics. It also offers an interesting perspective that intersects the studies of general linguistics and glottology, which makes this volume of interest to general linguists, classicists, philologists and literary critics alike.
The Language of Pain
How is the universal, yet private and subjective, experience of pain talked about by different people in everyday encounters? What does the analysis of pain-related lexico-phraseological choices, grammatical structures, and linguistic metaphors reveal as to how pain is perceived and experienced? Are pain utterances primarily used to express or to describe this experiential domain? This is the first book that investigates such questions from both a functional and a cognitive perspective: it combines two converging usage-based theoretical models in a systematic linguistic inquiry of the construal of pain in everyday language. This work is based on a specialised electronic corpus of Greek naturally-occurring dialogues in a health care context, the underlying assumption being that in the absence of factual evidence intuition about language cannot reliably detect or predict patterns of usage. Comparing Greek with English data, this book significantly contributes to the development of this research field cross-linguistically.
The Fictions of Language and the Languages of Fiction
Monika Fludernik presents a detailed analysis of free indirect discourse as it relates to narrative theory, and the crucial problematic of how speech and thought are represented in fiction. Building on the insights of Ann Banfield's Unspeakable Sentences, Fludernik radically extends Banfield's model to accommodate evidence from conversational narrative, non-fictional prose and literary works from Chaucer to the present. Fludernik's model subsumes earlier insights into the forms and functions of quotation and aligns them with discourse strategies observable in the oral language. Drawing on a vast range of literature, she provides an invaluable resource for researchers in the field and introduces English readers to extensive work on the subject in German as well as comparing the free indirect discourse features of German, French and English. This study effectively repositions the whole area between literature and linguistics, opening up a new set of questions in narrative theory.
