The Palgrave Handbook of Race and the Arts in Education
The Palgrave Handbook of Race and the Arts in Education is the first edited volume to examine how race operates in and through the arts in education. Until now, no single source has brought together such an expansive and interdisciplinary collection in exploration of the ways in which music, visual art, theater, dance, and popular culture intertwine with racist ideologies and race-making. Drawing on Critical Race Theory, contributing authors bring an international perspective to questions of racism and anti-racist interventions in the arts in education. Giving contours to shadows
Giving contours to shadows' is a research and exhibition project which takes its cue from the Glissantian concept that history, a "functional fantasy of the West", cannot be left in the hands of historians only. In that sense, the project looks at ways, by which artists, curators and thinkers relate to their own epoch, to times past and to the drawing of prospective trajectories, thus weaving alternatives to established narratives. The project and publication will uncover, discover and recover narratives, memories, knowledge and other histories in the form of a thematic reader comprising a collection of essays and critical texts, as well as image and text material about the participating artists, and will essentially cover the sections Performing and Embodying History, Wandering through History, Sequestrating History, Pre-Writing History.
Creativity Exercises
A collection of texts, historical and contemporary, on radical pedagogy in the arts. How do people learn, what do they know, and how does it influence their personality, their behavior, and their position in society? These questions were the focus of the research project and exhibition series entitled "Creativity Exercises" between 2014 and 2016, which displayed historical and contemporary art projects experimenting with alternative forms of learning, spanning three exhibition stations: Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst Leipzig, tranzit.hu in Budapest, and the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw. One Wall a Web' gathers together work from two photographic series, 'Our Present Invention' and 'All My Gone Life', as well as two text collages all made in, and focused on the United States. Through a mixture of writing, portraiture, landscape, and appropriated archival images, the book describes quotidian encounters with fraught desire, uneven freedom, irrational fear, and deep structural division, asking whether the historical and contemporary realities of anti-Black and gendered violence ? when treated as aberrations ? do not in fact serve to veil violence?s essential function in the maintenance of "civil" society. The book traces a chronological path through the two series, concluding with an extensive essay that explores resonances between questions of black life and the strange ontology of the photographic image.
