Diaries, compiled and edited by Marriner, originally written by George Stickney Flood who was born in Clinton, Me. The first diary begins in 1860 when Flood was teaching in a rural school in Clinton. He later peddled bed springs in Rhode Island and Massachusetts before becoming a recruiting agent during the Civil War. He later worked for the railroads and became involved in a scandal regarding Edwin Noyes, who embezzled the railroads. The diaries also reflect his activities as founder of G.S. Flood Co., a fuel business in Waterville, Me., and discuss the summer resorts on the Maine coast and on Moosehead Lake. Persons represented include members of the Noyes and Boutelle families.

Forest and Crag

A compelling story of our ever-evolving relationship with mountains and wilderness. Thirty years after its initial publication, this beloved classic is back in print. Superbly researched and written, Forest and Crag is the definitive history of our love affair with the mountains of the Northeastern United States, from the Catskills and the Adirondacks of New York to the Green Mountains of Vermont, the White Mountains of New Hampshire, and the mountains of Maine. It’s all here in one comprehensive volume: the struggles of early pioneers in America’s first frontier wilderness; the first ascent of every major peak in the Northeast; the building of the trail networks, including the Appalachi...

Waterville

Recognized today as one of Maine's largest central communities, Waterville has grown immensely since its early beginnings. Due to its location on the west bank of the Kennebec River, which provided power for mills built between 1850 and 1950, Waterville thrived as a center for textile manufacturing and papermaking. Early industries also included lumbering, farming, and shipbuilding, and the community's location in the state made it a railroad center. In 1813, Baptists founded Colby College, considered one of the nation's most prestigious liberal arts colleges. It has transformed Waterville into a true college town focused on preserving its heritage through preservation and downtown revitalization efforts.

An Exemplary Whig

Historians have paid surprisingly little attention to state-level political leaders and judges. Edward Kent (1802–77) was both. He served three terms as a state legislator, two as mayor of Bangor, two as governor, and two as a judge of the state supreme court. He represented Maine in the negotiations that resolved the long-running northeastern border dispute between the United States and Great Britain and served for four years as the American consul in Rio de Janeiro. The foremost Whig in Maine state politics and later a Republican judge, Kent articulated classic Whig political views and carried them forward into his Whig-Republican jurisprudence. In examining Kent's career as Maine's quin...
