Pragmatics of Space
This handbook provides a comprehensive overview of spatial configurations of language use and of language use in space. It consists of four parts. The first part covers the various practices of describing space through language, including spatial references in spoken interaction or in written texts, the description of motion events as well as the creation of imaginative spaces in storytelling. The second part surveys aspects of the spatial organization of face-to-face communication including not only spatial arrangements of small groups in interaction but also the spatial dimension of sign language and gestures. The third part is devoted to the communicative resources of constructed spaces and the ways in which these facilitate and shape communication. Part four, finally, is devoted to pragmatics across space and cultures, i.e. the ways in which language use differs across language varieties, languages and cultures.

This book presents the theory that the linguistic and cultural landscape of Europe north of the Alps and the Pyrenees was shaped in prehistoric times by the interaction of Indo-European speakers with speakers of languages related to Basque and to Semitic. These influences on the lexicon, grammar, and toponymy of the West Indo-European languages (with special focus on Germanic) are demonstrated in German and English research papers, provided here with summaries, commentaries, and a new introduction in English, and with general and etymological indexes.
Special Onymic Grammar in Typological Perspective
For the first time, proper names are made the topic of a cross-linguistic account of morphosyntactic properties which formally distinguish place names, personal names, and common nouns. It is shown that the behaviour of place names and personal names in morphology and syntax frequently disagrees with the rules established for other word classes independent of the language’s genetic affiliation, grammatical structure, and geographic location. Place names and personal names each boast a grammar of their own. They are candidates for the status of a distinct word class. Their special grammar comes frequently to the fore in the domain of spatial and possessive relations. This fact is explained with reference to functional notions.

Der Schwerpunkt des vorliegenden Sammelbandes liegt auf den frühmittelalterlichen Personennamen, die sowohl aus der Sicht von Sprachwissenschaftlern als auch von Historikern unter dem Aspekt ihres Quellenwertes beleuchtet werden. Diskutiert werden germanische, romanische und slawische Namen. Ein Beitrag befasst sich darüber hinaus mit vorzeitlichen Ortsnamen, ein weiterer blickt unter dem Titel „Vorhaben auf dem Gebiet der frühmittelalterlichen Namenforschung und Prosopographie“ in die Zukunft. Der Band vereinigt Vorträge, die auf einer internationalen und interdisziplinären Tagung vom 25.-29. Oktober 2007 an der Otto-von-Guericke-Universität Magdeburg zu diesem Thema gehalten wurden.
