Wilma’s Treasure Trunk: Short Stories

Diese Geschichten verfasste ich in einem anderen, vom eigentlichen Anatolien weit entfernten Anatolien. Wenn Sie sie gelesen haben, werden Sie sich über viele Dinge wundern und sich selbst viele Fragen stellen. Every life is a theatrical play and has its own intriguing story. But there are some lives that don’t dovetail into plays or stories. Their lives exceeded the dimensions of one particular story or play, transforming into a chain of stories and plays. While I was constructing the story of their strange life, I found myself on stage in a play. Nobody told me to act in it. I’m a volunteer actor in this play. The theater is where this play, in which I’m an actor, opens its curtains while you’re snoozing away in your warm, comfy bed. Sometimes after a one-act play is played, it closes its curtains before midnight, and sometimes it stays open until the morning to watch the awakening of those in the bosom of sleep. I’m the one who plays in and watches this strange game until the stories are yours.

Challenging Malaria

Five years after Ronald Ross discovered the link between malaria and mosquitos, American entomologist Leland Howard wrote of the "mosquito evil" that occurs when "everybody's business is nobody's business." Howard’s insight was largely ignored, but it captures what social scientists now refer to as the problem of collective action. When this problem persists in the context of malaria, individuals under-provide prevention and suffer from a higher prevalence of malaria. Imagine a group of people trying to drain a pond where mosquitoes breed. Everyone in the group faces an incentive to free ride, which can hinder their drainage efforts. Thus, when people fail to resolve issues related to coll...

What Time Is It?

  • Categories: Art

Arter initiates a new publication series, Arter Background, to accompany group exhibitions drawn from its collection, which holds more than 1,300 works of art as of 2019. This first book of the series accompanies one of the opening exhibitions of Arter’s new building, a collection-based group exhibition entitled What Time Is It?. Curated by Emre Baykal and Eda Berkmen, the exhibition is conceived around the concepts of memory, space and time. In the book, excerpts of texts selected around the ideas active in the curatorial process are complemented by new essays written specifically for this context, in line with Arter’s mission of encouraging artistic and cultural production. It thus fea...

Filmmakers on Film

This book bridges the gap between film theory and filmmakers' thoughts and poetics, and proposes a new way to address and elaborate film theory. It brings together primary sources by filmmakers themselves, drawing on their films, interviews, books, texts, and manifestos. Divided into three parts, the book covers the main aspects of this approach. Part one discusses the concepts of 'author' and 'filmmaker'. Part two evaluates the creative processes of a broad range of filmmakers, including Víctor Gaviria (Colombia), Kleber Mendonça Filho (Brazil), Jean-Luc Godard and Agnès Varda (France), Abbas Kiarostami (Iran) Pa. Ranjith (India), Andy Warhol (USA), Maya Deren (Ukraine-USA) and Nuri Bilg...

International Symposium on East Anatolia—South Caucasus Cultures

The Southern Caucasus is a region of great historical, cultural and strategic importance, which means that it has become an indispensable research field for most of the social sciences, particularly archaeology. However, despite its rich potential, research in the areas of modern-day Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Nakhichevan, North-western Iran and North-eastern Turkey has been inadequate when compared with other important culture basins such as Mesopotamia and the Mediterranean. In October 2012, Atatürk University in Erzurum, North-eastern Anatolia, Turkey, with the patronage of the Eurasian Silk Road Universities Consortium (ESRUC), hosted a Symposium of academics from more than 120 science and education institutions around the world to discuss opinions and share information about cultures in this region from its earliest times to the Middle Ages, within the scope of Ancient History, Archaeology, Art History, and Ethno-archaeology. This two volume publication is a compilation of 75 articles, which were evaluated and selected by an Academic Committee, from contributors who presented their academic papers at the Symposium.
