This thesis considers how contemporary British literature helps us understand the effect that a reductionist vision of Englishness has had in individuals who were born in the West Indian colonies and at some point decided to claim the source of their education, the "motherland," as their home(land). England understood itself as a relatively homogenous white society and reacted badly when commonwealth citizens began to immigrate during the 20 th century. This thesis particularly examines how colonial immigrants who settled in London found ways to negotiate their identities in the face of hostility in their "mother country." Chapter One analyzes Jean Rhys' Voyage in the Dark. This novel explor...

“A pathbreaking meditation . . . shifts the discussion . . . from . . . notions of guilt and innocence to the complexities of responsibility and accountability.” —Amir Eshel, Stanford University When it comes to historical violence and contemporary inequality, none of us are completely innocent. We may not be direct agents of harm, but we may still contribute to, inhabit, or benefit from regimes of domination that we neither set up nor control. Arguing that the familiar categories of victim, perpetrator, and bystander do not adequately account for our connection to injustices past and present, Michael Rothberg offers a new theory of political responsibility through the figure of the im...

Unruly Cinema

Between 1931 and 2000, India's popular cinema steadily overcame Hollywood domination. Bollywood, the film industry centered in Mumbai, became nothing less than a global cultural juggernaut. But Bollywood is merely one part of the country's prolific, multilingual cinema. Unruly Cinema looks at the complex series of events that allowed the entire Indian film industry to defy attempts to control, reform, and refine it in the twentieth century and beyond. Rini Bhattacharya Mehta considers four aspects of Indian cinema's complicated history. She begins with the industry's surprising, market-driven triumph over imports from Hollywood and elsewhere in the 1930s. From there she explores how the nationalist social melodrama outwitted the government with its 1950s cinematic lyrical manifestoes. In the 1970s, an action cinema centered on the angry young male co-opted the voice of the oppressed. Finally, Mehta examines Indian film's discovery of the global neoliberal aesthetic that encouraged the emergence of Bollywood.

Nola bete kontrazal bat? Ohikoena, liburuaren laburpen/goraipamen bat kokatzea da. Baina sekula ez dago argi zein den testu horren benetako egilea, sinatuta ez datorren liburuko bakarra den neurrian. Printzipioz editoreak izan beharko luke sinadurarik gabeko sinatzailea, liburuaren alde eginez: lan-hau-e-zin-bes-te- koa-da, e-ros-i! Baina argitaletxe askok egileei eurei enkargatzen diete kontrazaleko testua. Gutxitan idazten dute, ordea, singularraren 1. pertsonan, fikzioari ?editorialarena dela? eutsiz. Izan ere, askotan, liburuko fikziorik lortuena kontrazalekoa da. Beste aukera bat: obraren lagin bat ipintzea. Baina nola jakin aukeratutako erakuskaria benetan esanguratsua den? Edo, okerrago, zer gertatzen da liburuko gainontzeko pasarte guztien gainetik badago? Azkenik, egileak liburuaren edukiarekin lotura zuzenik ez duen testu bat propio sor dezake, hemen bezala. Nahiz eta hau ere, ahalegin guztiak egin arren, ez dugun sinatuko, eta ez dugun lortuko singularraren 1. pertsonan idaztea, kontrazalaren lege ezkutuen menpe baikaude betiere.

As Spaniards set out to transform the political, social and cultural landscape of the nation following the death of dictator Francisco Franco in 1975, its crime fiction traces, challenges and celebrates these radical changes. Crime Fiction from Spain: Murder in the Multinational State provides a comprehensive exploration of the relationship between detective fiction and national and cultural identities in post-Franco democratic Spain. What sort of stories are told about the nation within the state in the crime genre? How do the conventions of the crime story shape not only the production of national and cultural identities, but also their disruption? Combining criminological theories of crim...
