Even in the usually unflappable art world, Eva and Adele stand out. Their shaven heads, garish costumes, and intense use of make-up have made them identifiable to many. This book promises to spread their hyper-conscious gender play to an even wider audience, and features drawings and photographs of the outlandish twosome in all their campy glory. Their shrill and shimmering packaging in which they present themselves along with their radiant smiles inspire astonished gazes, laughter and genuine enjoyment. "Wherever we are is a museum" Eva and Adele's thirty-year-long performance project. Eva and Adele are a pair of artists known for their permanent, lifelong performance as "hermaphrodite twins from the future." This performance takes place worldwide in a variety of public spaces and has garnered them a reputation as fashion icons. CUM (Latin for "with") is their series of media-and-performance pieces that form the essence of their interactive process. The group was first acknowledged in 1997 at the Sprengel Museum with the solo exhibition CUM, and continues to this day in a variety of media. For CUM, Eva and Adele requested one of two Polaroids taken by the public--co-performers--including a signature. Based on this they created a group of important drawings and paintings which they developed in the subsequent artistic process. The publication forms the work complex CUM in its entirety; the volume is completed by valuable text contributions by Robert Fleck, Lisa Schmidt-Herzog, and Marcus Steinweg.

Since 1989, Eva & Adele have been showing up at exhibition openings and art fairs, their heads shaved, their faces made up in garish colors, their bodies clad in eccentric--often pink--dresses complete with stilettos and dainty handbags. Although their outward appearance bears connotations of femininity, Eva & Adele conceal their real identities, championing a gender identity that is freely chosen by the individual rather than defined by society. In "Obsidian"--the title refers to the mysterious dark gemstone--Eva & Adele now use the means of art to offer the first ever glimpse of their intimate life beyond their spectacular performances.

Um gewohnte Sichtweisen, Begriffe und Zusammenhänge zu hinterfragen, leben EVA & ADELE seit 1991 zusammen und erschaffen ein gemeinsames, konzeptionell angelegtes Werk: Indem sie stets zusammen, gleich gekleidet, lächelnd in der internationalen Kunstwelt auftreten.
