For hundreds of years, the beautiful Southeast Asian archipelago was fairly isolated from its neighbouring as well as western countries. Only since 2000, the Philippines began to open its business markets to foreign investors. In his book, Timo Priester scrutinizes the Philippine retail structure. He offers interesting insights about the organization of Manila’s (the country’s dominant capital) retail trade. The principal focus is on three different business markets: The Mobile, the Home Appliances and the Audio Visual Market.

In der vorliegenden Studie geht es um ein Team der stationären Eingliederungshilfe, das systematische Gewalt unter Berufung auf ein behaviorales Gruppenkonzept jahrelang als Therapie legitimierte. Aus narrativen Interviews und dem Übergabebuch des Teams werden Entstehungskontexte und Praktiken rekonstruiert und mit einer Heuristik des Schweigens analysiert. Die Befunde zeigen Möglichkeiten zur Verschleierung von Machtmissbrauch und Gewalt in etablierten Arbeitsformen wie der Dokumentation und der Elternarbeit. Sie verdeutlichen auch, dass routinierte Schweigepraktiken Aufdeckungsmomente in Organisationen überdauern können.

Dabei haben das Technische wie das Ästhetische die Bedeutung einer Interdependenz aufzuweisen: Das Technische konstituiert einerseits Funktionen, Formen und Gebrauchsaspekte - ästhetische Zustände evozieren andererseits zeichenhafte Realisierungen, phantasmatische Urteile und wahrnehmungsvermittelte Phänomene des Erscheinens. Die Beiträger*innen des Bandes zeigen, wie bei der Konfrontation von Technik und Ästhetik eine Art Verkopplung und intrinsische Dynamik qua techno-ästhetischer Evokation entstehen kann.

In Mapping the ‘I’, Research on Self Narratives in Germany and Switzerland, the contributors, working with egodocuments (autobiographies, diaries, family chronicles and related texts), discuss various approaches to early modern concepts of the person and of personhood, the place of individuality within this context, genre and practices of writing. The volume documents the cooperation between the Berlin and Basel self-narrative research groups during its first phase (2000-2007). Next to addressing crucial methodological issues, it also demonstrates the richness of egodocuments as historical sources in contributions concentrating, for example, on the body and illness, on food, as well as on the early modern economy, group cultures and autobiographical considerations of one's own suicide.
