Saul Bellow: "I Was a Jew and an American and a Writer" offers a fresh and original perspective on the life and works of Saul Bellow, the Nobel Prize winner in Literature in 1976. Author Gerald Sorin emphasizes Bellow's Jewish identity as fundamental to his being and the content and meaning of his fiction. Bellow's work from the 1940s to 2000, when he wrote his last novel at the age of 84, centers on the command in Deuteronomy to "Choose life" as distinct from nihilistic withdrawal and the defense of meaninglessness. Our Ellison Kinfolk
Two lines of Ellison's traced who arrived in America. John Ellison (1585?- 1660?) was born in Windyedge, Lanark Co., Scotland. He married Ellin Hamilton and came to Virginia around 1622/23. They had two children. The second line traced descends from Robert Ellison (1742-1806) son of William Ellison. He was born in Antrim, Ireland and immigrated to South Carolina. He married Elizabeth Potts and they had nine children. Ellison descendants live throughout the United States.

People and Things from the Blount County, Alabama Southern Democrat 1939 - 1942
The Southern Democrat was established by Forney G. Stephens at Blountsville in 1894. After fellow newspaperman Lawrence H. Mathews of the Blount County News-Dispatch died in 1896, Stephens moved the Democrat to Oneonta. When the News-Dispatch folded in 1903, the Democrat was the preeminent Blount County newspaper. Stephens died in 1939, but the Democrat continued to publish in Oneonta for almost 100 years. In 1989 the old Southern Democrat was renamed the Blount Countian. Microfilm for the old Southern Democrat was acquired from the State Archives in Montgomery and studied page by page. Every mention of births, marriages, deaths, obituaries and news important to the history and development of Blount County was reproduced here. This book is vital for any serious student of Blount County, Alabama genealogy and history.
Craven
In 1750, Peter Craven (ca. 1712-1792) settled in North Carolina from New Jersey. His ancestors were originally from England. Descendants and relatives lived in North Carolina, Missouri, Kansas and elsewhere.
