The killing took place outside a busy coffee bar in Naples in broad daylight. Pupetta was eighteen years old and six months pregnant when she pulled the gun from her bag. The victim? A man known as Big Tony who had ordered the hit on her husband just months earlier... In this unputdownable exposé of women in the Mafia, investigative journalist Barbie Latza Nadeau tells the stories of the women who have risen to prominence in the Italian mob, beginning with the first documented female boss, the infamous Pupetta Maresca. Through personal interviews and groundbreaking research, Nadeau gives us a jaw-dropping 360-degree view of the dark underbelly of Italian society, taking us deeper into the Mafia and its complex realities than ever before. 'Takes the reader into the little-known role of the women that underpin Italy's most ruthless mob families' Sara Gay Forden, author of House of Gucci 'An unflinching portrait of one the original divas of organised crime' Clare Longrigg, author of Mafia Women 'A must for true-crime fans' Publishers Weekly

Assigning Responsibility for Children’s Health When Parents and Authorities Disagree: Whose Child?

This book provides a multidisciplinary analysis of the potential conflict between a government’s duty to protect children and a parent(s)’ right to raise children in a manner they see fit. Using philosophical, bioethical, and legal analysis, the author engages with key scholars in pediatric decision-making and individual and religious rights theory. Going beyond the parent-child dyad, the author is deeply concerned both with the inteests of the broader society and with the appropriate limits of government interference in the private sphere. The text offers a balance of individual and population interests, maximizing liberty but safeguarding against harm. Bioethics and law professors will...

America's New Vaccine Wars

This book traces the history, politics, and ethics of mandatory childhood vaccination policy in America, with close attention to recent legislative changes in California. California was the first US state to ban unvaccinated children from school in response to parents refusing vaccines. The new policy kick-started immunization rates, but also ignited polarizing debates about whether government should restrict people's liberty to promote public health. Other US states, and other countries, are watching California carefully: should they follow in its footsteps? Using original interviews with politicians, activists, technical experts, and civil society organization representatives, Mark C. Navin and Katie Attwell unpack the causes and consequences of cracking down on vaccine refusal in contemporary America.

Weighed down by the gains: India’s twin double burdens of malnutrition and disease

Given its continent-like diversity, India’s epidemiological, nutritional, and demographic transitions are occurring in a staggered fashion, with high state-level variances. In many parts of the country, high rates of undernutrition co-exist with equally high and increasing rates of overweight and obesity. Further, the incidence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) as a leading cause of mortality is increasing, even as the communicable, maternal, neonatal and nutritional causes (or the “Millennium Development Goals (MDG) conditions”) are coming down. Indeed, India has witnessed inconsistent progress towards the MDGs, and even in states where absolute levels of “MDG conditions” are still high, the NCD proportion is growing rapidly. The imperative is for a realignment of policy responding to fast-changing subnational realities, through greater integration between health and nutrition policy at every level of governance.

Maffia & Co.

Adesso tocca a noi
