Receptions of Newman
Over the past two centuries, few Christians have been more influential than John Henry Newman. His leadership of the Oxford Movement shaped the worldwide Anglican Communion and many Roman Catholics hold him as the brains behind reforms of the Second Vatican Council. His life-story has been an inspiration for generations and many commemorated him as a saint even before he officially became the Blessed John Henry Newman in 2010. His writings on theology, philosophy, education, and history continue to be essential texts. Nonetheless, such a prominent thinker and powerful personality also had detractors. In this volume, scholars from across the disciplines of theology, philosophy, education, and history examine the different ways in which Newman has been interpreted. Some of the essays attempt to rescue Newman from his opponents then and now. Others seek to save him from his rescuers, clearing away misinterpretations so that Newman's works may be encountered afresh. The 11 essays in Receptions of Newmans show why Newman's ideas about religion were so important in the past and continue to inform the present.

The ideal, at both the individual and the communal level, involves, for Newman, a union of ethical and devotional praxis on the one hand and critical self-reflection on the other - in short, the union of "clear heads and holy hearts". Terrence Merrigan is a member of the Faculty of Theology of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Louvain), Belgium. He pursued his doctoral studies on Newman under the direction of Jan Hendrik Walgrave. He has published a number of studies on Newman and edited a special centenary issue of "Louvain Studies" (1990) dedicated to the Cardinal's life and thought.

Volumes 22 and 23 in the Collected Works document many of Bernard Lonergan's lectures and seminars on theological method, and in so doing trace the evolution of his thought between the publication of Insight and the completion of Method in Theology. Volume 22 contains a record of his English lectures on method delivered at institutes in 1962 (Regis College, Toronto), in 1964 (Georgetown University), and in 1968 (Boston College), while volume 23 is devoted to his Latin courses on method offered at the Gregorian University between 1958 and 1962. Blessed John Sullivan SJ
John Sullivan SJ was born in Dublin in 1861. Once dubbed 'the best dressed man about Dublin', he seemed destined, like his father, for a career in law. Then, following a conversion to Catholicism, at the age of 35 he entered the Jesuit novitiate in Tullamore, Co Offaly. Immediately after his ordination, he was sent to Clongowes Wood College, Co Kildare, where he spent most of his remaining years. At Clongowes, he became renowned for the hours he spent in prayer, his asceticism, and for his kindness and wisdom. His reputation spread outside the college walls, with many people calling on him in their hour of need. His love of the poor and sick led to miraculous cures being attributed to him. After his death in 1933, devotion to him continued to grow, and in 1947 the first stage of the process of Canonisation was introduced. The large numbers who visit his tomb in St Francis Xavier Church, Gardiner Street, Dublin, bear testimony to the continuing belief in the power of his intercession with God. John Sullivan SJ was beatified in Dublin in May 2017.
