Journalism
This volume sets out the state-of-the-art in the discipline of journalism at a time in which the practice and profession of journalism is in serious flux. While journalism is still anchored to its history, change is infecting the field. The profession, and the scholars who study it, are reconceptualizing what journalism is in a time when journalists no longer monopolize the means for spreading the news. Here, journalism is explored as a social practice, as an institution, and as memory. The roles, epistemologies, and ethics of the field are evolving. With this in mind, the volume revisits classic theories of journalism, such as gatekeeping and agenda-setting, but also opens up new avenues of theorizing by broadening the scope of inquiry into an expanded journalism ecology, which now includes citizen journalism, documentaries, and lifestyle journalism, and by tapping the insights of other disciplines, such as geography, economics, and psychology. The volume is a go-to map of the field for students and scholars—highlighting emerging issues, enduring themes, revitalized theories, and fresh conceptualizations of journalism.
Narrative Values, the Value of Narratives
There is a growing interest in studying narrative discourse as ‘experimental values laboratory,’ both reflecting social values and participating in their circulation. Given the omnipresence of narrative and story-telling practices in public life, from advertising to politics, law, and the media, the need for narrative savviness – that is, the ability to read for the values that inhere in and are transmitted through narrative – transcends the study of fiction. This volume brings into focus the ways in which narratives are informed and shaped by values, and how they transmit values themselves. The authors in the volume take a broad range of approaches to narrative, including narratology, rhetoric, ecocriticism, narrative (meta)hermeneutics, applied narratology, and frame theory. By bringing together strands of contemporary narrative theory that are not often found in dialogue with one another, the volume aims to capture the most recent developments in the study of narrative ethics.
Witnessing the Sixties
This volume focuses on the convergence between journalism and literature in the 1960s. The sixties is shorthand for a ubiquitous social, political and cultural upheaval in the Western world with its culmination point in 1968. The changes in society were so encompassing and impressive that many considered traditional ways of making sense of the world no longer sufficient; accepted cultural forms suddenly seemed to lose their capacity to interpret reality. While witnessing and experiencing the reshaping of society both journalists and novelists - as well as film makers and artists - had to find new ways to describe what was happening. Imagination and commitment, subjectivity and performativity were pervading literary and journalistic representations alike. The contributions in this volume explore how journalistic and literary norms, practices and forms got entwined in the 1960s and how the limits of both domains were stretched.
French Political Travel Writing in the Interwar Years
This book studies travel writing produced by French authors between the two World Wars following visits to authoritarian regimes in Europe and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). Corpus Pragmatic Studies on the History of Medical Discourse
The original studies in this volume provide new insights into the history of medical discourse across centuries in both professional and lay texts. The central themes deal with changes in medical writing in various societal and cultural contexts in search for best practices in corpus pragmatics for future work. Some studies apply quantitative methods of corpus linguistics and Digital Humanities, others adopt a qualitative, discourse-analytical perspective, focusing on particular texts, authors or medical topics, or specific functionally-defined discourse forms such as narratives. Quantitative and qualitative approaches are mutually complementary and shed light on different aspects of historical medical discourse. The methodologies aim at establishing validity and reliability for pragmatic analysis, taking into account relevant contextual factors and insights from other fields, such as medical and social history, history of ideas, and science studies.
