Understanding how humans cope in extreme environments has expanded our knowledge of the physiological and psychological challenges involved and helped us to quit our comfortable paradigms built on “steady states”. Furthermore, measuring our reactions to intermittent stressors and determining the oscillations of our coping mechanisms has led us to unexpected understandings. This methodology has also directly improved our translational or multidisciplinary approach to the subject. Studying healthy individuals in extreme environments could improve our understanding of patients with impaired physiological capacities (who are coping with an environment that becomes extreme to them) and also improve our understanding of physiology and psychology in the elderly. This eBook collects articles that address this translational multidisciplinary approach in an integrative way. As a whole, this Research Topic aims to better understand human/animal physiology and psychology.
“Thoroughly researched, clearly explained, and beautifully illustrated…[this book] provides powerful insights and actionable steps for regulating the nervous system.” —Alex Korb, Ph.D., Neuroscientist, Personal Development Coach, and Author of The Upward Spiral A somatic approach to treating trauma, anxiety, and depression has never been more popular. Perhaps that’s because recent studies show that 80% of mind-body communication originates in the body —the vagus nerve is the superhighway that facilitates this communication. Healing Through the Vagus Nerve walks you through how the nervous system and the vagus nerve function, with approachable, non-academic language and helpful il...
Are humans inherently good? Where does compassion come from? Is death essential for life? The surprising confluence of Buddhist thought and cutting-edge biology.
Taking a science-based look at an emerging area of medicine, Adaptive Biology and Medicine: New Frontiers, Volume 3 discusses the biology of adaptation at the molecular, cellular, and system levels in response to a variety of stressful conditions. Leading international experts present a total of 37 chapters that cover a common continuum of adaptations. For easy reading, the information has been grouped under the sub-headings: Cardiovasular Adaptation, Adaptations to Changes in Altitude and Microgravity, and Environmental Stresses. Examples of cross adaptations are included where repeated exposure to one stimulus may have applications in the treatment and prophylaxis of different diseases. Understanding disease and the mechanisms involved can help us fight disease. When you look at illness through the lens of adaptive biology you can sometimes see medical problems in a new and thought-provoking light. Offering promise for therapeutic strategies in both experimental and clinical pathology, Adaptive Biology and Medicine: New Frontiers explores a new way of thinking about physiological adaptations and their link to disease development.
Nature offers us spices, which are a significant part of healthy and nutritious foods. The presence of abundant bioactive compounds in these spices makes them interesting from a scientific and health perspective. Extracts obtained from spice materials possess many health benefits and are rich sources of antioxidants, which suppress reactive oxygen species. Spice Bioactive Compounds: Properties, Applications, and Health Benefits collects such information together in one book, presenting all necessary features related to spices and their properties. Exploring the most recent research related to the extraction, isolation, encapsulation, identification, and characterization of bioactive compound...
Among the components of the limbic system, the amygdala is a fascinating structure that is involved in the processes of liking and disliking and in the ways our emotions drive our actions and affect the strength of our memories. Combined with new conceptual breakthroughs, the very latest data obtained by leading world experts in amygdala function that are reviewed in this book have helped to understand how the amygdala contribute to these processes and also to a variety of neurological and neuropsychiatric pathologies. Of course, due to the rate of research advancement, all the chapters presented here correspond to precise questions addressed by experts using highly specific techniques. Ther...
