200 Puzzling Physics Problems

200 Puzzling Physics Problems

This book will strengthen a student's grasp of the laws of physics by applying them to practical situations, and problems that yield more easily to intuitive insight than brute-force methods and complex mathematics. These intriguing problems, chosen almost exclusively from classical (non-quantum) physics, are posed in accessible non-technical language requiring the student to select the right framework in which to analyse the situation and decide which branches of physics are involved. The level of sophistication needed to tackle most of the two hundred problems is that of the exceptional school student, the good undergraduate, or competent graduate student. The book will be valuable to undergraduates preparing for 'general physics' papers. It is hoped that even some physics professors will find the more difficult questions challenging. By contrast, mathematical demands are minimal, and do not go beyond elementary calculus. This intriguing book of physics problems should prove instructive, challenging and fun.

  • Publisher: CRC Press

This reference provides thorough and in-depth coverage of the latest production and processing technologies encountered in the aluminum alloy industry, discussing current analytical methods for aluminum alloy characterization as well as extractive metallurgy, smelting, master alloy formation, and recycling. The Handbook of Aluminum: Volume 2 examines environmental pollution and toxicity in each stage of aluminum alloy production and metal processing, illustrates microstructure evolution modeling, and describes work hardening, recovery, recrystallization, and grain growth. The authors cover potential applications of various aluminum intermetallics, recent surface modification techniques, and types and causes of aluminum alloy corrosion.

  • Publisher: Elsevier

This is the second volume of a four volume set intended to describe the techniques and applications of thermoanalytical and calorimetric methods. The general techniques and methodology are covered extensively in Volume 1, along with the fundamental physicochemical background needed. Consequently the subsequent volumes dwell on the applications of these powerful and versatile methods, while assuming a familiarity with the techniques.Volume 2 covers major areas of inorganic materials and some related general topics, e.g., catalysis, geochemistry, and the preservation of art. The chapters are written by established practitioners in the field with the intent of presenting a sampling of the how t...

200 More Puzzling Physics Problems

200 More Puzzling Physics Problems

Like its predecessor, 200 Puzzling Physics Problems, this book is aimed at strengthening students' grasp of the laws of physics by applying them to situations that are practical, and to problems that yield more easily to intuitive insight than to brute-force methods and complex mathematics. The problems are chosen almost exclusively from classical, non-quantum physics, but are no easier for that. They are intriguingly posed in accessible non-technical language, and require readers to select an appropriate analysis framework and decide which branches of physics are involved. The general level of sophistication needed is that of the exceptional school student, the good undergraduate, or the competent graduate student; some physics professors may find some of the more difficult questions challenging. By contrast, the mathematical demands are relatively minimal, and seldom go beyond elementary calculus. This further book of physics problems is not only instructive and challenging, but also enjoyable.

Structure and Structure Development of Al-Zn Alloys

  • Type: Book

  • Published: 1995-05-09

  • Publisher: Wiley-VCH

Age-hardenable aluminium based alloys have several favourable properties, e.g. high electrical conductivity and good strength with respect to their fairly low density. Among them the Al-Zn system is particularly suitable for studying phase transformations in supersaturated solid solutions from both the technological and the physical point of view. The decomposition processes in the Al-Zn system have been studied by many authors over the last three decades. Thus a huge amount of information concerning the behaviour and properties of Al-Zn alloys is available, which can hardly be overlooked. The authors of this book present a well-structured summary of this knowledge. For better understanding of the processes proceeding in Al-Zn alloys, some general features of binary Al alloys as well as a few theoretical aspects of metal physics are given as introducing chapters. The closing chapter presents interesting new developments af Al-based materials.
