Epidemiological research is an important tool for the improvement of preventive and curative healthcare. A valid study design, unbiased study conduct and proper interpretation of study results are essential, as these provide the foundation for evidence-based medicine. This book provides guidance on how to design, conduct and interpret human population-based medical research. It reflects the diversity in the field and will therefore discuss the methodology of etiological, diagnostic, prognostic and intervention research. This textbook is written for bachelor?s and master?s degree students receiving training in the biomedical sciences and for practitioners in the medical and allied professions. It will also serve as a reference manual for those with basic or advanced experience of epidemiology. Commissioned by the European Epidemiology Federation.#xE000.

Health Surveillance of Individual Workers Exposed to Chemical Agents

Early in 1985, a meeting was held to discuss the organization of a work shop in honour of Professor Reinier L. Zielhuis on the occasion of his retirement on November 30,1986. Various themes for such a workshop were considered, but it was Zielhuis himself, who ultimately selected "Health surveillance of individual workers exposed to chemical agents" as the theme of the workshop. Although this topic is of the utmost im portance for occupational health practice, it is also a very difficult one, given our currently limited knowledge on the subject. The choice of this topic is characteristic of Reinier Zielhuis, a scientist and scholar who throughout his career has been deeply concerned with the health and health risks of workers. Because he regards occupational and environmental exposure - including life style - as two aspects of the total exposure to chemical and physical factors, he emphasizes the need to assess the impact of this total exposure on workers' health. The impact of total exposure probably detennines to a large extent the in dividual variability in response. This was the main reason why he selected the above-mentioned topic for the workshop.

Shows the risks of high-tech pollution through a study of an IBM plant's effects on a New York town In 1924, IBM built its first plant in Endicott, New York. Now, Endicott is a contested toxic waste site. With its landscape thoroughly contaminated by carcinogens, Endicott is the subject of one of the nation’s largest corporate-state mitigation efforts. Yet despite the efforts of IBM and the U.S. government, Endicott residents remain skeptical that the mitigation systems employed were designed with their best interests at heart. In Toxic Town, Peter C. Little tracks and critically diagnoses the experiences of Endicott residents as they learn to live with high-tech pollution, community trans...
