African Initiatives in Christianity
In the continent where Christianity is experiencing its most rapid growth, a great deal of this expansion is taking place in churches founded by Africans for Africans. These churches are often referred to as 'independent' or 'indigenous' churches, to distinguish them from the 'historic' or 'mission-founded' churches planted during the colonial period by evangelists from Europe and North America. Diverse as they are, the attractiveness of these African Initiatives in Christianity (AICs) stems from the serious attempt they make to express and live out their faith in genuinely African cultural forms and styles. In this new book, two African theologians and church leaders -- one from an historic church, one from an AIC -- offer an insightful introduction into this phenomenon. While their main focus is on what the growth of African Initiatives in Christianity implies for the future of the ecumenical movement in Africa and around the world, they also examine some key teachings of the AICs and trace their roots in African church history since the first century.
From Migrants to Missionaries
The denominational plurality in continental Europe keeps growing. The churches of African origin are of increasing number. Seeking for a new identity in their new home, the concept of Diaspora and the question for legal issues get important for their identity. To what extent is their identity determined rather by seclusion or openness? Are the churches missionizing amongst Germans and are there ecumenical relations? What are the characteristics of such a new identity? How does it develop? By analyzing three different types of churches of African origin in the German context, especially by examining their sermons, the author demonstrates how those churches develop in a missionary direction and how they can become ecumenical partners.
Movement Or Moment?
This collection of essays was written to mark the fortieth anniversary of the Second General Conference of Latin American Bishops, which convened at Medellín, Colombia, in 1968. Inspired by the Second Vatican Council and seeking to implement its vision, the bishops viewed the occasion as a decisive one for Latin America, which they saw as standing 'on the threshold of a new epoch in the history of our continent'. It appears to have been a time full of zeal for emancipation, of liberation from every form of servitude, of personal maturity and of collective integration. Forty years later, however, it is appropriate to remember the event and to review the significance of liberation theology in light of all that has happened during the intervening period. The colloquium at the Milltown Institute, Dublin, which led to this book, sought to do precisely that: to establish where liberation theology now stands by questioning whether it really is a significant theological and ecclesial movement or merely a moment whose time has passed, and to investigate its enduring legacy.
Spirit-Filled World
This book is about African Pentecostalism and its relationship to religious beliefs about a pervading spirit world. It argues that Pentecostalism keeps both a continuous and a discontinuous relationship in tension. Based on field research in a South African township, including qualitative interviews and focus group discussions, the study explores the context of African Pentecostalism as a whole and how it interacts with the concepts of ancestors, divination, and various types of spirit. Themes discussed include the reasons for the popularity of healing, exorcism, the “prosperity gospel,” the experience of the Holy Spirit, Spirit manifestations and practices resembling both traditional and biblical precedents, as well as scholarly discussions on African Pentecostalism from theological and social scientific disciplines. The book suggests that the focus on a spirit-filled world affects all kinds of events and explains the rapid growth of Pentecostalism outside the western world.
