Transcending Dystopia

"Transcending Dystopia features pioneering research on the role music played in its various connections to and contexts of Jewish communal life and cultural activity in Germany from 1945 to 1989. As the first history of the Jewish communities' musical practices during the postwar and Cold War eras, it tells the story of how the traumatic experience of the Holocaust led to transitions and transformations, and the significance of music in these processes. As such, it relies on music to draw together three areas of inquiry: the Jewish community, the postwar Germanys and their politics after the Holocaust (occupied Germany, the Federal Republic, the Democratic Republic, and divided Berlin), and ...

The Fruits of Madness: Perspectives on the Prophetic Movements in Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and in Literature brings together selected oral presentations given at the Seminar in Biblical Characters in Three Traditions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam) and in Literature held at the University of Vienna, Austria, in July 2014 as part of the Annual International Meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature. Why Hidest Thy Face

Why did he suffer? Whose fault was it? Wasn't it unfair to the children? In the end, the Bible's only answers are that these are mysteries and one must live in faith. This book traces the enduring struggles of theological masters to understand Job, one of the fundamental stories nourishing the roots of modern western and middle eastern cultures.

Disciplining Germany

A look at how the discussions, debates, and controversies in Germany about youth and reeducation after World War II helped Germans come to terms with their Nazi past, negotiate Allied occupation, and construct postwar German identity. During Hitler’s reign, the Nazis deliberately developed and exploited a youthful image and used youth to define their political and social hierarchies. After the war, with Hitler gone but still requiring cultural exorcism, many intellectuals, authors, and filmmakers turned to these images of youth to navigate and negotiate the most difficult questions of Germany’s recent, nefarious past. Focusing on youth, education, and crime allowed postwar Germans to cla...

This work examines interpretations of Elijah in as an immortal being teaching the Law to the chosen ones. In all three religious traditions, Elijah is a mysterious person. He appears ready to undertake the mission to restore the hearts of the people, to bring them back to the right path. He is also the prophet about whom Jesus said; 'Elijah already came'. To understand humanity's recognition of Elijah and his role in the three traditions, we should examine three events; God's revelation to Moses via the 'burning bush', God's revelation to Elijah through the 'still small voice' and the relationship with Khidhr. Each of these traditions presents to us an immortal being who walks the earth teaching the chosen the true comprehension of the Law. Elijah plays different roles. For one he heralds the coming of the Messiah. To others he comes to identify the importance of the Torah. And in the Islamic tradition he is revered as a miraculous person.

We Lived for the Body

Nature was central to the Wilhelmine German experience. Medical cosmologies and reform-initiatives were a key to consumer practices and lifestyle choices. Nature's appeal transcended class, confession, and political party. Millions of Germans recognized that nature had healing effects and was intimately tied to quality of life. In the 1880s and 1890s, this preoccupation with nature became an increasingly important part of German popular culture. In this pioneering study, Avi Sharma shows that nature, health, and the body became essential ways of talking about real and imagined social and political problems. The practice of popular medicine in the Wilhelmine era brought nature back into urban...

Baal, St. George, and Khidr

In Western tradition, St. George is known as the dragon slayer. In the Middle East, he is called Khidr (“Green One”), and in addition to being a dragon slayer, he is also somehow the prophet Elijah. In this book, Robert D. Miller II untangles these complicated connections and reveals how, especially in his Middle Eastern guise, St. George is a reincarnation of the Canaanite storm god Baal, another “Green One” who in Ugaritic texts slays dragons. Combining art history, theology, and archeology, this multidisciplinary study demystifies the identity of St. George in his various incarnations, laying bare the processes by which these identifications merged and diverged. Miller traces the ...
