In WWI the country borders of the Austro-Hungarian Empire were in a mess and matched only by the chaos within the armies. Leaders struggled to command men, who spoke a multitude of languages different from their own, in places far removed from their homes. Napló (the Hungarian word for diary) is the story of one of these commanders, my grandfather, Stolmár Géza, and his experiences throughout the war. This book contains the English translation from the original and some of the original photos. Stolmár Géza was a family man with a three and one year old daughter. At 36, he was well into his banking career at Maktár Bank, in Budapest. He lived in the city and had a cottage in Domonyvölg...

Practical Clinical Endocrinology

This practical book aims to cover the whole scope of clinical endocrinology, including both common and selected rare but important diseases, with an emphasis on practical clinical management. A number of different questions and problems in clinical routine are discussed in this book in an unconventional format. Each topic begins with the presentation of a typical clinical case, and then the topic is approached in a question and answer format linked to the clinical case presented, highlighting the most important questions in diagnosis, differential diagnosis and therapy. Numerous figures and tables are included to help understanding. The book is chiefly intended for doctors in training (preparing for boarding exam in endocrinology or internal medicine), but also for established clinicians who want to broaden or refresh their skills. University students of medicine can also find this book interesting.

In Avar-Age Polearms and Edged Weapons, Gergely Csiky offers a presentation of close combat weapons of a nomadic population that migrated from Inner Asia to East-Central Europe. During the late 6th – early 7th centuries, the Avars led successful military campaigns against the Balkan realms of the Byzantine Empire, facilitated by their cavalry’s use of stirrups for the first time in Europe. Besides the classification, manufacturing techniques, fittings, suspension, distribution, and chronology of polearms and edged weapons known from Avar-age burials, a special emphasis is laid on the origins and cultural contacts of these weapons, among them the first edged weapons with curved blades: the sabres. The social significance and, function of these artefacts is discussed in order to place them in nomadic warfare.
