Solar Architecture in Cool Climates

'A must-read for practitioners, teachers and others interested in or working with energy use in the built environment, including a delightful set of examples' Ann Grete Hestnes, former President of the International Solar Energy Society Solar Architecture in Cool Climates is an invaluable primer on low energy building design, combining accessible information with convincing arguments enabling new techniques to be implemented in daily practice. Approaching the topic in a thematic manner, the book provides inspiration, an understanding of key principles and technical data on the design of solar buildings in higher latitudes. The text is enlivened through direct experience of case studies from ...

Energy Transition and Geoeconomic Fragmentation

The transition to a low-carbon economy, which is needed to mitigate climate change and meet the Paris Agreement temperature goals, has been affected by the supply chain and energy supply disruptions that originated during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and the subsequent energy crisis and exacerbation of geopolitical tensions. These developments, and the broader context of the ongoing “polycrisis,” can affect future decarbonization scenarios. This reflects three main factors: (1) pullbacks in climate mitigation policies and increased carbon lock-in in fossil fuel infrastructure and policymaking; (2) the decreasing likelihood of continuous cost reduction in renewa...

Buildings consume more energy than any other sector of our economy. They account for around 40% of the energy we consume. Making the buildings we live and work in more energy efficient will bring energy and costs savings, reduce our impact on the environment, and improve living and working conditions. The Intelligent Energy-Europe programme supports a range of projects across the EU designed to reduce the amount of energy old and new buildings consume. This brochure showcases some of these innovative initiatives.

This book provides insight into the Life Cycle Management (LCM) concept and the progress in its implementation. LCM is a management concept applied in industrial and service sectors to improve products and services, while enhancing the overall sustainability performance of business and its value chains. In this regard, LCM is an opportunity to differentiate through sustainability performance on the market place, working with all departments of a company such as research and development, procurement and marketing, and to enhance the collaboration with stakeholders along a company’s value chain. LCM is used beyond short-term business success and aims at long-term achievements by minimizing environmental and socio-economic burden, while maximizing economic and social value.

Global Fossil Fuel Subsidies Remain Large: An Update Based on Country-Level Estimates

This paper updates estimates of fossil fuel subsidies, defined as fuel consumption times the gap between existing and efficient prices (i.e., prices warranted by supply costs, environmental costs, and revenue considerations), for 191 countries. Globally, subsidies remained large at $4.7 trillion (6.3 percent of global GDP) in 2015 and are projected at $5.2 trillion (6.5 percent of GDP) in 2017. The largest subsidizers in 2015 were China ($1.4 trillion), United States ($649 billion), Russia ($551 billion), European Union ($289 billion), and India ($209 billion). About three quarters of global subsidies are due to domestic factors—energy pricing reform thus remains largely in countries’ own national interest—while coal and petroleum together account for 85 percent of global subsidies. Efficient fossil fuel pricing in 2015 would have lowered global carbon emissions by 28 percent and fossil fuel air pollution deaths by 46 percent, and increased government revenue by 3.8 percent of GDP.
