Telling an adopted child that he or she is adopted can be difficult for a parent. The challenge lies in making the child feel special, the way we as Christians feel when we are adopted into the family of Christ, in the same way the vineyard grower grafts a new vine to another grape vine so that it becomes one with the vine-not just a part of, but one with its new host. Every child should feel that he or she was chosen just for that family. Jesus said, "From the womb I knew you." I wrote this story as a way to tell these children how God chose their family while they were yet in their birth mom's womb telling them that while in the womb their "real" adopted parents were waiting for them. JOURNEY MOUSEARELLO

Come join Journey Mousearello, the little church mouse, as she travels through Long Island to the big city in Manhattan to find what she calls her special beat, which only she hears in her head. Journey comes from an old, traditional church where hymns are sung and prayer is part of everyday life. But that is not enough for our little Journey. Slow and steady is not what she hears when she sings to her Lord. At choir practice, all are in harmony, except our little church mouse. She hears a sound that's different than what everyone else is singing. When news arrives that the church choir will be entered into a singing competition at Radio City Music Hall, Journey gets excited. She knows if she can teach the choir the sound she hears in her head, they will be sure to win this year. But she doesn't know exactly what that sound is. Come join Journey as she searches for that special beat that only she hears in her head, and meet all the new friends she will make on the way.

Gina

Gina Large, a real life transsexual, relates her traumatic and very reluctant transgender journey of self-discovery, as it really happened, from May 2001, giving a powerful insight into the suffering of gender dysphoria and the inevitable gender identity crisis. In her previous life, Gina was outwardly successful, but inwardly, unknown to the World, a very unhappy soul, existing in a permanent and severe anxiety state (medical symptoms). Incredibly, it wasn't until shortly after her 54th birthday, that Gina suddenly realised what had been wrong all her life. She believes the widespread prejudice, ridicule, blind ignorance and hostility which still persists against transsexuals is rooted in a basic lack of understanding. Gina spoke at the 2002 Gendys International Conference and the Police Diversity Training National Conference, and recently appeared, with partner Joan, on the BBC's Kilroy Programme. She is now training to carry out further work with police forces in the UK, helping officers to gain more understanding of diversity in society.

Stolen Pleasures

"Short stories and some short novels are close to poetry—with the fewest words they capture the essence of a situation, of a human being. It's like trying to pin down the eternal moment." —Gina Berriault Gina Berriault was one of the great, rare masters of short fiction. With commendable restraint and economy, she delivered stories that contain entire worlds inhabited by a range of characters thrown into all kinds of unsettling predicaments. As a short story writer she had a gift for tapping into the emotions of love, hope, and grief, and for making them palpable within her narratives. No two of her stories are alike, except for in the inevitable disquiet the reader feels in their wake, the exquisite unease that remains at the end of such acclaimed tales as "The Cove," "The Stone Boy," and many others. Now, in this compelling posthumous collection, Berriault's astonishing short fiction once again proves that her position as one of America's best storytellers remains unchallenged.
